My introduction to club music goes back to probably around 1981 when I was a sophmore in high school and my locker partner at the time , Randall Jackson , was to be the DJ for the party the school was having....I remember the feeling that I got as I stood and watched the crowd dance from the music he played.....It was AWESOME ! And from that moment I was hooked ! I promptly went home and started to try and figure it out....I remembered 2 " record players " and this " black box " in between them....I later found out that the " record players " were turntables and the " black box " was called a mixer.....Fast forward a year to my junior year of high school and this is where I began to see and really experience what was to later be called house music and I met people that would literally change my life...I met a guy who became my musical tour - guide , if you will. This guy's name is Lee Collins....who still spins disco and house music to this day !See, my Mom was sort of strict and even though I would catch H-E-L-L for wanting to stay out all night at a party....I still was able to hear about the parties and all from Lee...and he also was the one who would tell me who made all these strange records that consumed all of my thoughts...Crazy insane love to Lee ! Thanx man !When I turned 17....it was all over ! My Mom let up and I began to party on a pretty regular basis... My party of choice was The PowerPlant @ 1015 N. Halsted ! That is where I met another person who has a lasting impression on my life... DJ Frankie Knuckles ! Now by this point, I'd saved up and bought a pair of brand new Technics 1200's and a Pyramid mixer and I spent a good part of my time in my bedroom practising.....and practising.....and practising some more. I was what we now call a bedroom dj !I had joined a , now defunct , record pool called Black Pool started by this guy named Frank Selz . Frankie was a member of the pool and we held our meetings at the PowerPlant on Thursday afternoons..The real benefit for me was I got to watch Frankie program the Friday night parties and work out new mixes...He also would take time and explain why he did certain things the way he did...It was an education that I really treasure ! I didn't realize it at the time but I was watching the beginnings of house musicI also began to attend parties at the Muzik Box where Ron Hardy was creating his legend...! It was everything that you may have heard but at the same time...it was so much more ! The volume of the music...the bass ....it would grab your chest and just move you....I knew from that point that music in some way would always be a part of me...In some ways it was one of the best periods of my life...Of course..life wouldn't be that easy and I had to give up spinning to take care of a family. What's funny is when my wife ( at the time )and i couldn't work things through... Music was there. I began to build up a record collection again ( yes... I sold my last one ) and once again fate would cause me to move away from music. Thing that I learned is even though I didn't have records or turntables anymore...I always had the music in me.Fast forward to October 2002....I'm working a 9-5 job and I happen to meet a guy named Paul Blair who DJ's and we strike up a conversation about how it feels when you're playing and about my past experiences...and the next thing I know, I'm at Guitar Center buying 2 of the new Technics 1200 M3D's and a mixer....!And that is where it really all began !I tell ya house music is addictive !
