About Me

Emily Bruce fell in love with Jazz at 17 and at 29 is considered one of South Africa's top female Jazz singers. She is a graduate of the University of Cape Town and released her first album 'This Love We Share' in March 2007. Emily is working with South Africa's top Jazz musicians Alvin Dyers, Wayne Bosch, Buddy Wells, Alistair Andrews, Denver Ferness, Mark Fransman, Dave Ledbetter and others and will be recording her second album in 2009. She is currently in the post-production stages of a trio album recorded with good friends Buddy Wells (sax) and Wayne Bosch (guitar). In the year 2000 Emily was recognised as 'Talent Deserving Wider Recognition' by the Old Mutual Jazz Encounters and again in 2002 she was awarded a national merit prize for voice. She works extensively in Cape Town and will be travelling the world with her music. Emily Bruce is also a talented actor and visual artist (painting in oils) and is discovering new skills with tenor saxophone. She is a composer and lyricist and hopes to release original material soon. Emily has been awarded a partial scholarship to study at Berklee College of Music in Boston and is currently waiting for confirmation on her acceptance. She plans to start it September 2009.

My Interests

Music:

Band Members: On the album 'This Love We Share' Alvin Dyers - guitar, Basil Moses - double bass, Ivan Bell - drums and the late Nic le Roux - tenor sax also Wayne Bosch - guitar & Mark Fransman - tenor/soprano sax. At the moment I perform with the Alvin Dyers band that includes Alistair Andrews - 6 string bass and Denver Ferness - drums and my trio also known as B3 that includes Buddy Wells - tenor sax and Wayne Bosch - guitar.
Influences: I grew up in the church with gospel music. Nothing hectic but those are my earliest memories - standing in church singing praise and worship next to my Ouma and harmonising hymns with my Mom in the car on the way somewhere. At home my parents collection included The Carpenters, Donald Fagan, Chicago and Bread. I also have memories of Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and Anita Baker and as a teenager I lived by the radio station Good Hope FM and was introduced to George Benson, Luther Vandross, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Chan, Toni Braxton, Sade etc etc.It was only once I had been accepted to study Jazz vocal at the University of Cape Town in 1998 that I met and fell in love Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan. As I grew in the music and in life Billie Holiday started to make sense and when I stumbled upon the CD Shirley Horn with Horns and Loads of love I knew I'd found my true love. Jazz.In the last few years I've discovered Wayne Shorter, John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins. Only now after so many years of being in the music have I started buying and listening to intsrumental Jazz! Of course my main influences are the musicians I work with on a regular basis. Alvin Dyers is more than my friend - he's my inspiration and my mentor. Wayne Bosch, Mark Fransman, Buddy Wells, Andre Petersen and so many others touch my life through their intruments and I grow musically every gig because of them. It's amazing..
Sounds Like: Jazz
