Influences: I grew up in the church with gospel music. Nothing hectic but those are my earliest memories - standing in church singing praise and worship next to my Ouma and harmonising hymns with my Mom in the car on the way somewhere. At home my parents collection included The Carpenters, Donald Fagan, Chicago and Bread. I also have memories of Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and Anita Baker and as a teenager I lived by the radio station Good Hope FM and was introduced to George Benson, Luther Vandross, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Chan, Toni Braxton, Sade etc etc.It was only once I had been accepted to study Jazz vocal at the University of Cape Town in 1998 that I met and fell in love Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan. As I grew in the music and in life Billie Holiday started to make sense and when I stumbled upon the CD Shirley Horn with Horns and Loads of love I knew I'd found my true love. Jazz.In the last few years I've discovered Wayne Shorter, John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins. Only now after so many years of being in the music have I started buying and listening to intsrumental Jazz! Of course my main influences are the musicians I work with on a regular basis. Alvin Dyers is more than my friend - he's my inspiration and my mentor. Wayne Bosch, Mark Fransman, Buddy Wells,
Andre Petersen and so many others touch my life through their intruments and I grow musically every gig because of them. It's amazing..
Sounds Like: Jazz
