TIME AND DISTANCE was never supposed to be a "real" band.It was early 2002 in Charleston, West Virginia, when singer/songwriter GREG MCGOWAN (then a junior in high school) began writing the songs that would become the "BLOOD LOSS FOR AN EXCUSE" EP. Having no real plans or direction for the project, McGowan wrote simple songs that he could relate to, and accompanied them with only an acoustic guitar. He played everywhere, for anyone who would listen, eventually catching the ears of Rob Hitt, of the band MIDTOWN, who decided to sign McGowan to his new I-Surrender Records label in early 2003.McGowan graduated high school in May 2003, and hit the road only a week later for his first US tour. The "BLOOD LOSS" EP was released in August 2003, and McGowan logged even more time on the road, touring with such bands as MIDTOWN, A STATIC LULLABY, THE MOVIELIFE, THE HONORARY TITLE, and ONELINEDRAWING that summer and fall.Late 2003 saw McGowan adding another guitarist to expand the band's live sound, and by early 2004 drums & bass had been brought in as well, giving the "BLOOD LOSS" songs a new feel, as well as setting the tone for the new songs McGowan was writing. The band stayed on the road for the better part of 2004, gaining new fans and new momentum in every city they visited.Early in the summer of 2005, the band headed to Washington DC to work with uber-producer MATT SQUIRE on what would be their debut LP, "THE WAY IT SHOULD BE." Squire pushed the band to think and work better and harder than they'd previously thought possible, and the resulting eleven songs showed remarkable growth for the band. More and more touring followed and after numerous delays, and a split from I-Surrender Records, TIME AND DISTANCE released "THE WAY IT SHOULD BE" themselves on August 15, 2006. The album received massive critical praise, and has been a top seller on SMARTPUNK.com, INTERPUNK.com, and ITUNES since it's release. In late 2006, an unexpected lineup change brought TIME AND DISTANCE back to a solo act. Not missing a beat, MCGOWAN started playing acoustic shows, calling on some of his friends to help back him up when needed, and used it as an opportunity to stretch his writing and put a few twists & turns into the formula.2007 saw McGowan putting a new lineup together for the band, recruiting ex- BIG CITY DREAMS drummer CHRIS BRITTAIN of ATLANTA, GA and JEFF MOTEKAITAS, of BOSTON, MA. The band also used most of 2007 to write and expand their arsenal of songs, while still getting even more tours under their belts, with bands such as BOYS LIKE GIRLS, FOUR LETTER LIE, ROOKIE OF THE YEAR, REDISCOVER, and ROSES ARE RED.The new lineup ("real" band status finally realized / accepted) had also brought a new sound to the table. Gone was the focus on things being strictly acoustic, with the band going instead for whatever style or dynamic seemed to suit the songs best. They started to write loud, fun rock songs and pretty, sweet acoustic ones all in the same breath. The resulting songs have taken on a myriad of directions, both sonically and lyrically- from the usual girl troubles that TIME AND DISTANCE have become so well known for, to newer territory like letting go, and realizing that everything/one you used to know has changed. The songs are also packing enough hooks & sugary goodness inside, you may just need a toothbrush when you're done. (see: the demo of the new song "BABY BE..." for an example)But this? This is only the beginning of the TIME AND DISTANCE story. You see, in every town, in every state there are kids just like you and I - kids dying to be a part of something special, thirsty to believe in something real. Kids who see the "scene" as something more than just guyliner and gossip magazines.. something a little bit more like.. a movement??! Can a song change the world? We're not sure - but TIME AND DISTANCE just might have the hooks, the songs, and the looks to make the takeover....unless, of course, they spontaniously explode..
