Stop Sharpening Your Knives is a pamphlet series founded by Sam Riviere and Jack Underwood in 2005. S.S.Y.K. (1) came out in October of that year, featuring the work of eight young poets who met in Norwich.
Since then the S.S.Y.K. editors have organised a fringe event at the Wells Poetry Festival, impromptu soapbox readings, appeared at such prestigious events as the Troubadour readings and the Aldeburgh Festival. They've also added to the line-up of young writers who will feature in S.S.Y.K. (2), an altogether bulkier and glossier production, to be launched in spring 2007.
S.S.Y.K. has big plans for the future. Maybe too big. The editors foresee a time when S.S.Y.K. dominates the cultural landscape as a nation-wide platform for emerging poets, novelists, artists, musicians, cartoonists, film-makers and time-wasters, in the form of a quarterly, multi-media, completely full-on magazine. Who can say if they are visionaries or fools? In any case, in the wake of S.S.Y.K. (2) they will be seeking out contributions from audacious young artists in all of the above-mentioned practices.
O reader, keep your ear to the ground! Hear S.S.Y.K. gathering pace like a distant locomotive , or a rapidly approaching ranching-gang on horseback, or some sort of giant subterranean creature burrowing skyward. S.S.Y.K.'s distinctive resonance will encourage you to hold secretive meetings in your basements, detune your telly and daub the walls with splattered revolutionary symbols; to support creative acts of dubious merit, start rumours and hold questionable opinions; to believe in fiction, mess with the parameters and not consider the consequences.
