"Edery and his band are among the best interpreters of Sephardic Music in the business." -The New York Jewish Week
Born in Morocco, raised in Paris, and now based in New York City, master Sephardic Singer/Guitarist/Composer Gerard Edery draws from his wordly background to create music that spans genres, cultures, and eras.
Gerard leads several different bands and projects through which he explores the depths of ancient Sephardic music and blends it with modern World Music.
Programs
"The Gerard Edery Ensemble" is well noted for their instrumental virtuosity, performing songs in some dozen languages. These gifted musicians bring an ancient repertoire to the contemporary stage, bridging ancient and modern ethnic repertoires. The Ensemble has been widely praised for energizing Sephardic music with new arrangements and a contemporary sound, and fueling the evolution of Sephardic music with new arrangements and original compositions.
"The Spirit of Sepharad: From Casbah to Caliphate”
" A soul-stirring musical journey, "The Spirit of Sepharad: From Casbah to Caliphate” " traces the unique migration of Sephardic music from medieval Spain, across North Africa, to the Middle East. Combining music, dance and illuminating projections, this dynamic mixed-media performance brings to life all the rich cultural strains that influenced Sephardic/Mizrahi Jews. Featuring an array of virtuoso musicians from multiple disciplines, the program includes songs of secular and liturgical origin (spanning many centuries to the present), from Ancient Persia, Iraq, Spain, Portugal, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Libya, Egypt and Morocco. The musical story of a rich cultural heritage that synthesizes diverse influences, "The Spirit of Sepharad" is a celebration of the Sephardic/Mizrahi experience that invites the possibility of coexistence, tolerance, respect and peace among all peoples.
"Two Faiths, One Voice"
An ecumenical program that honors Christianity and Judaism, “Two Faiths, One Voice” traces the peripatetic wanderings of Sephardic music over the centuries -- from Medieval Spain to modern Eastern Europe -- singer and folklorist Maria Krupoves and the singer and virtuoso guitarist Gerard Edery uncover the surprising synergies between Eastern-European (Jewish and Christian) and Middle Eastern (Jewish and Arabic) musical faiths.
A celebration of the deep-rooted parallels between Christian and Jewish traditions, "Two Faiths, One Voice" features two of the world's most renowned musical poly-culturalists -- Maria Krupoves, a specialist in Central and Eastern European folksongs, and Gerard Edery, a master player in multiple languages and styles. Together for the first time, they uncover the haunting, captivating and magical dimensions of a wide array of traditional music. Whether these songs are secular or devotional by origin, each has retained a special power to move and uplift.
"Flamenco Sepharad"
This unique combination of Sephardic song and flamenco rhythm makes for a fiery performance unlike any other. With new arrangements of traditional Sephardic repertoire and original compositions by Gerard Edery, the ensemble seamlessly fuses the world’s most passionate music with the brilliant and sensual dancing of Barbara Martinez and Rick Santiago. Emotive vocals, flamenco guitars, world beat percussion and Spanish dance make this show a must see!
