About Me

NAME: CTRL-S [ FIND ME ON FACEBOOK ]
FROM: Los Angeles, California
REPRESENTING: Project 51 Recordings
AFFILIATIONS: Illformants, Project 51 Recordings, Moving Shadow, Subtitles, nVision, Breakbeat Science, Warm Communications, Thermal Recordings, Rhythm Method (San Francisco)
RESIDENCIES: Rhythm Method (San Francisco)
Raised in Los Angeles and with roots in a number of punk bands, CTRL-S started his music career playing guitar in his early teens. Soon after, he began recording four-track sessions with his bandmates which led to gigs around LA. "Finding a good, reliable drummer was tough. And then finding a place to practice was even tougher," he recalls. So when a friend sold him a TR-909 drum machine he immediately began working with beats and loops, exploring new sounds which led him to his new addiction: GEAR.
In 1992, CTRL-S moved to San Francisco to study audio engineering at University. During his years at University he was exposed to the sound of drum n bass at his post as Music Director of KSFS Radio. Shortly thereafter, he started to seek out the dnb scene in SF and became a regular visitor of the esteemed Eklektic weekly. It was during this time that he began to work with his own ideas for dnb tunes.
In late 1998, he signed his first single "Freestyle" to Oakland's Thermal Recordings. Since then, he's had a steady stream of releases, including collaborations, on labels such as Gridlok's Project 51 imprint, Breakbeat Science, Skynet's nVision label, Subtitles and forthcoming tracks on Moving Shadow. When asked about the collaborations, he says "I'm fairly picky about dnb, so working with others requires similar taste. Working with folks like AngelZero and Gridlok has been a priveledge as both of them are solid engineers." Now living back in his hometown of Los Angeles, Controlled Substance is staying busy working on new material.
Through the years, his tracks have received support by the likes of Goldie, Ed Rush, TeeBee, Skynet, Silver, and Gridlok among others. His tunes have received positive reviews in Knowledge, URB and XLR8r magazines.
As a DJ, he's played all across the US, from Hawaii to Miami and from Los Angeles to New York. With 7 years playing drum n bass and 10 years on the decks, his selection reflects some of the freshest cuts supplied by fellow producers from around the world.
