Fata "el Moustache" Morgana, live 27-02-2006, Paradiso, small hall

El Moustache is a pretty rubbish name and when they played the members kept putting on fake moustaches. This is the kind of quirky behaviour which would usually make me want to kill myself but, I don’t know, for some reason this and the bad dancing and the human beatbox and the super stupid lyrics, it worked. El Moustache are amazing. It’s like with some groups you look at the people and listen to the music they’re making and wonder how a band like this could happen. One of the guys looked like a football hooligan, one looked a bit like a child molester, another like a 50s California surfer and the songs they played veared madly between ska punk, industrial, funk, new wave and, well, just noise. I know this could all end up feeling very self-conscious and forced but these guys have the tunes, charisma and imagination. Imagination is a dirty word but it’s the best. It all seemed chaotic and sort of improvised but not in a boring way. They pummelled through their songs and some of these only lasted a few seconds and it was cool because it felt like it could all fall apart at any second but it didn’t and they kept storming on. El Moustache are a Dutch band. Very Dutch. This is good because who wants to hear fake American accents and bland English lyrics? No, I want to see a creepy skinny guy under the spotlight shouting at me in Dutch and shaking his fist. Everything about El Moustache is wrong and right at the same time.
