I am here for Friends

About Me

there are three vital elements in my life that support my ability to get through each day: my family and friends, music and laughter
i drive a minivan and will always drive a minivan. i love my minivan...i feel dumb using "___ and i" instead of "me and ___" even though it's gramatically correct...i don't always know why exactly, but the past is very important to me...on the road, i never honk my horn or scream obscenities...i am a vegetarian because i have made a personal decision that eating meat is morally wrong. i also don't wear or use any products made of leather...i haven't gained or lost more than 5 pounds since high school. i would be considered a "skinny" guy...half of me is japanese and half of me is white...i currently live alone in an expensive one bedroom apartment. that is i don't live with any other humans...i have a pug named kazu. if she were to die unexpectedly, i would enter an extremely deep depression, the end of which might never come.
have a look at the art inspired myspace profile that me and alex started. it's called kazu.art and it's right down there in my top friends.

My Interests

of course, like most people, i'm interested in countless things. one problem is that i've never been interested in something to the extent that i become an "expert" with regards to that particular thing. thus my constant frustration with mediocrity. anyways, some of the main things that interest me:
all things pertaining to music - listening to, playing, recording, etc. i play guitar and have a simple knowledge of some other instruments. i am very happy and lucky to be in a band called slings with my best friend/brother in law david. i am also very lucky to help out as a live band member of my good friend jon's project called old war shirt . music has long been a very important element in my life. it has brought happiness and has also really helped me cope with certain unfortunate events of the past. it's not a stretch to say that my emotional state is often directly related to how music is involved in my life.
all things pertaining to film and photography - cameras, lenses, still, video, digital, film, shooting, watching, etc. sometime back in high school the desire was planted in my head to one day make movies. i think i still want to do that. for a lot of reasons i won't go into here, filmmaking and the industry of it has brought a lot of grief into my life. i've thought of dropping my dreams altogether many times, but i think i still want to try. as far as still photography goes, i try to take as many photos as possible, of any subject. these days, i mostly use the digital but i still have my slr with me at all times.
i also like art. how vague is that? i like new, old, fine, graphic, painting, drawing, sculpting, fabric, stencil, scribbling, collage, found object, ceramics, printwork, etc. most art has at least some value to me, even that shitty stuff like hotel art. although i'm usually an observer rather than a participant, due to laziness and lack of free time, i sometimes enjoy painting and drawing myself.
i also have to say that skateboarding has been a huge influence on my identity as a person over the past 10 years or so. a skateboard has accompanied me through countless meaningful experiences and has been the catalyst in many great friendships i've formed. for me, skateboarding has almost always related to all of the interests mentioned above.
i guess it's safe to say that i'm interested in pretty much everything. here's a short list: collecting things (salt and pepper shakers, cool/weird lamps, nightmare before christmas stuff, antiques, figurines, clown stuff, nativity scenes, etc.), cooking (though i'll admit i'm not very good at it and don't do it nearly as much as i'd like to), travelling (i have this absurd plan that before i die, i'll set foot in every country in the world!), animals...especially dogs...especially small dogs with flat faces, writing (mainly bad poetry), holidays (emphasis on halloween and christmas), childhood nostalgia, religion, philosophy, history, playing sports (ping pong, soccer, tennis, badminton, golf...you know, all the manly stuff), building things (large scale construction to small projects), both the tragic and beautiful ways in which human beings interact with eachother and of course, ETC.

Television:

my landlord recently had satellite tv installed in our building and so far i've taken full advantage of countless wonderful late night movies, such as busty cops, playmate of the apes, lord of the g-string, erotic confessions, erotic games, erotic diaries, erotic tales and last but surely not least, erotic dreams.
generally tv shows don't hold my attention, however i do like chappelle's show, the simpsons, unwrapped, iron chef, shows about dogs on animal planet, most shows on tlc, discovery and the history channel, viva la bam, wild boyz. america's funniest videos is the best show that's ever been on tv. if it makes me laugh, i can appreciate it.
stuff that's not on anymore: da ali g show, kids in the hall, the state, mr. show, twin peaks, jackass, old cartoons, especially disney and looney tunes.

Books:

last read: the brothers karamazov by fyodor dostoevsky
currently reading: the wind up bird chronicle by haruki murakami, the beatles anthology, any conan comics i can get my hands on
want to read: a good biography of david bowie, the bible, anna karenina
other stuff i have enjoyed previously in my reading career:
moby dick, the adventures of huckleberry finn, a clockwork orange, the chronicles of narnia, the harry potter series, the hobbit and the lord of the rings trilogy, books by john bellairs, books by kurt vonnegut (favorites are galapagos and slaughterhouse five), hamlet, romeo and juliet, where did i come from?, conan comic books, daniel clowes (eight ball, ghost world, etc.), optic nerve comics, walt disney: hollywood's dark prince, disposable: a history of skateboard art, magazines (music, art, film, skateboarding, design, architecture), (auto)biographies about creative people, books about religion, children's books with cool illustrations, etc.

Heroes:

i have this small list of people that i joke about how i would be completely happy if i was any one of them and not myself. the list includes ed templeton, spike jonze and david bowie. but honestly, i don't really know any of these people so it's ridiculous to put so much of my admiration towards them. to me, the true heroes in my life are the ones who have given so much of their love unconditionally, those who have always stayed true to their love, those who weren't selfish, those who put others before themselves, those who were always honest and sincere, those who have given me pure and genuine compassion.
the top of this list is occupied by kazu kawamura, dennis and linda poulton, william and joanna kawamura, david pope and last but probably most, my sister carly poulton...
