About Me

Don't let the come-hither gaze, lips built for sin and/or murdering karaoke, and rakish cut of my jib fool you. Behind that is someone mad, bad, and rather difficult for anyone to know completely (and I've tried).I'm a grad student up in the hills of Appalachia, with a trail behind me that winds through NYC, London, and Connecticut. I teach, grind away at my dissertation, broadcast, play soccer and hockey, race in triathlons, ski, cook, garden, and watch the birds circle way up over my patio on nice summery days like this one. I like to write and read as much as anything, and just about anything I do in my life comes back to that sooner or later. I like thoughts - I produce a ton of them - and I love words. Not crazily pretentious, show-off words, but good words, with their own fine taste and texture. I like to move and be moved. And I like stories; my own stories, and other people's stories. I'm here to know them, to put them together and figure them out.I live in my head a lot - it's the place to be. I live in history, in a cloud of remembered and imagined images, in a state of self-reflexivity, in the seen and unseen. Also, in bars with excellent beer, better pizza and a game showing. An imaginative, contemplative, open and opaque dreamer...I take nothing seriously, and almost everything seriously, am pretty straightforward and awfully complex at the same time. Which I suppose doesn't make me the most predictable guy going. But I'm generally pretty positive, generally pretty stable, and generally pretty good. I like it like that.

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

I must be getting more schoolmarmish with this, 'cause the older I get, the more proper punctuation and good posture turn me on. Well, that and witty, willowy blondes. Naturally.

My Blog

Town and Country

I've barely seen anything besides my apartment and classrooms since moving to Maryland two months ago, so it was good to get out this weekend.  To DC on Friday night for birthday, pizza, friends,...

Itll be just like starting over...

So I've decided to do some thing about My Internet Presence.  I've started up, and am too widely scattered over 'space, 'books, blogs.  They all fall into disrepair like genteel old houses i...

To the "friend" of mine leaving her anonymous messages....

Leave her alone, now.  Period.Talk to me if you've got something you want to say.  If you've got the least little bit of courage and backbone, then say it to me.  But I won't count on i...

Just when you think we've stamped all the wonder and surprises out of nature...

I heard about this on my drive home today.  Awesome in the literal sense of the word.  And in war-torn southern Sudan, of all places.http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/6749415.stm"Conserv atio...

A nice pointless trip to the airport

Someone will have to tell me what they're trying to get at with this "Port Columbus" airport business.  I've been flying in and out of that place for a few years now, and I've never understood it...

On the two old Austrians squaring off in my head

"The limits of my language are the limits of my world." - Wittgenstein But no no, Ludwig, there's a whole universe beyond language, after the pretty, precocious describer-words and bragger-words in ...

At midnight, with a bowl of fruit salad, weather makes me tired.

This afternoon, I walked to work after a wave of the Katrina rains had passed.  The skies were gray and moved fast, like inside the eye of a storm, and the breezes fresh, mild, and slightly ...

Sunday morning, 1:30 am

Enough of me and my soaring aimlessly on borrowed literary wings.  Today is Kyra's day, and Kai's day....in just a couple hours she'll be taking the next step - the actual BMT.  If you're re...

Various

I haven't written anything in a week, as I do sometimes.  Seems like the more I declare that I'm going to start keeping these blog things up regularly, the more I let them go.  Work has got ...
