Afrika Rainbow is a prolific roots reggae band formed on the principles of brotherhood, love of music, and desire to spread a positive and socially conscious message to the masses. Born on the island of Santiago, Cabo Verde, the band came together in 2000 in the United States, blending reggae sounds with powerful lyrics that promote unity and draw attention to Afrika the experiences of Afrikans in America and around the world.
As the world around them appeared to be falling apart, Afrika Rainbow came together one day when the group of friends decided that they had to do something to transmit positive energy, and help effect change for humankind. Musically, they were increasingly drawn to the vibrations of roots reggae and Rastafarian philosophy which was blended with a foundation of Amilcar Cabral’s hope for universal human rights. As they played Bob Marley covers and explored the work of Garvey, Halie Salessie and Malcolm X, more and more they were thinking seriously about music as a vehicle for their message. Using Cape Verdean kriolu and English, all members of the group compose individually and collaboratively as a group. After seven years together, Afrika Rainbow has evolved to a full fledged band, with a strong repertoire of original compositions that mix roots reggae, the sounds of Cabo Verde, hip-hop, and Afrikan diasporic music with positive and socially conscious lyrics.
Formed in Afrika and America, Afrika Rainbow is more than just a band, it is a state of mind. It’s a musical revolution, a mystical expression of hope, love and unity for all colors of the rainbow because we all share one common root.*read the entire Afrika Rainbow Bio at AfrikaRainbow.blogspot.com
