About Me

Since 2005 we have been playing all the kinds of music that take our fancy. One of our main influences are jazz & blue's styled reggae & dub music, decent electronic music and good old phycadellic prog rock. A mutual part of nearly all of these music's is improvisation, be it the Skatalites amaizing solo's, Zappa's way of compleatly changing songs at any oppertunity or one of King Tubbys experiments in dub they are all ready to take a chance & we like to take those chances too! The band started when Nat, Jim & Brendon (Cockney Lobster) found Dan Poole to play drums and recorded a number of song's written by ourselve's as a live band at Strode college studio in Jan 05 under the name Cockney Lobster & the Sea Street Urchins after only 3 practices with Dan (including one gig!). We also got ex-FluF member Jason to play a bit of sax on a couple of songs. Soon afterwards we were recording again before Luke joined on keyboards & after learning all the songs, we booked another session in the stuido. By the time the day came, Brendon had left England to travel France for a while & so the band changed it's name to the Sea Street Urchins. The recording took place in May & shortly afterwards we played at a party. We then booked another recording that took place soon afterwards as an acoustic 3-piece set up minus drums after convincing Luke to perchase a Melodika, which has become an important part of our sound. By this point we were loosing contact with Dan as he had joined Proof of Planes so we practiced as a 3 piece for the next year, practicing and recording our songs live on our 4-track. After a while we started experimenting & overdubbing drum beats using various bits of percussion, computers and kitchen utencils & got a free organ we picked up from a lady in Poole (which died straight after a recording only a few months after we got it!) & waved towards a dub heavy sound, with King Ginga mixing down dub versions of every song & the addition of K-Ball (who previously drummed for Cockney Lobster) joining with hand drums & a synth pad. We recorded a number of versions of our tracks with all of us Urchins getting dubwize mixes down as well as the original versions. K-Ball soon invested in a drum machine & installed his drum kit @ our home studio, the Bus Stop Studio which was donated a mixing desk from our mate Sketch & the band started playing live as well as continuing the experiments in recording & dub to form a dub album. Over the new year we recorded a few of our songs for a demo & a number of live dub versions combining our live & studio skills. The demo will be out soon & we hope to update the song's regularly to release some of the back catalouge of recordings we have done so far, so feel free to download them as they will hopefully be changed monthly! We plan to do more recordings soon and start gigging so please get in touch if you can help us out, if you would be interested in a copy of the demo or if you have some old recording/musical kit you want to get rid of (maybe a Hammond or a Moog? Ha!)!
