About Me

If you put stock in astrology... this is what you'll get .
I'm a stealth jew. It's the nose: a hybrid specimen. Mom (Russian Jew) had the bump and dad (Euro-mutt WASP) had the button. I had blonde hair as a child, but you'd never know it now. (We'll see how long my nephew's lasts.) I'm a NYC native, but lack what people consider a "New York accent." I lived a couple of years in China, but decidedly lack the fetish. (I was on the completely wrong continent for nearly two years.) I used to have a habit of hosting random foreigners, but I think I've repayed the karmic debt I incurred for the assistance I recieved on my third move to Beijing.
As for keeping busy, I just finished law school, and instead of taking the bar, I'm negotiating with the DOJ for a project that offers rewards to immigrants reporting horrible crimes, but without them having to worry about getting deported.
I expect life will continue sending me back to Washington pretty regularly.

My Interests

reading, crude photography, sushi, global goings-on, reading, burlesque, the foreign service, criminal prosecution, minor myths (eg: the furies & medusa), rusty fencing, and just plain crappy tennis.

I'd like to meet:

Only one way to find out. People who'll make a mix CD for me would be nice, but not really necessary. AIM - "rswmenzi"

Music:

Insufficient for claiming hipster status, but it keeps me happy: lots of soundtracks (not scores), Leonard Cohen, Air, Bowie, Verve, U2, Portishead, Tori, Radiohead, Blondie, Cure, Smiths, Doors, Joy Division, Moby, Dido, Liz Phair...

Movies:

Blade Runner, Snatch, the Trouble with Harry, Million Dollar Hotel, Natural Born Killers, A Clockwork Orange, 3000 Miles to Graceland, Minus Man, Reservoir Dogs, Dune, Company Man, the Last Days of Disco

Television:

Conan O'Brian (stand-by tickets, baby), Adult Swim (when I'm up), Daily Show (I've been known to attend), Firefly ("Serenity"), Simpsons (of course). This American Life (radio, but it still counts)

Books:

The Dictionary of Cultural Literacy (yes, this is actually a book), Candide, Discipline and Punishment, the Plague, No Exit, Harry Potter, cheap Sci-Fi paperbacks (Gaiman, Stephenson, Haldeman, etc.), Siddhartha, The Killer Angels

My Blog

The Nephew

My nephew was a 9-pound, 14-ounce bundle of joy for my brother, and a one hell of a C-section for his wife. Add insomnia, shake, and you have a little Val... that's right "Val." Short for Valdis, my...

Due Date

My brother's son was due yesterday. Apparently, he inherited the family trait of lateness. (I was a week past due myself. My brother was two weeks early, but it looks like that was a fluke.) If h...
