What is a BusEye?
At Laurel Falls Camp for girls, in Clayton, Georgia back in the '20s, '30s and '40s there lived a permanent year round resident named, BusEye. BusEye was an imaginary creature Lillian Smith created to bring joy, delight and mystery to the campers' experiences. While researching my first documentary, "Miss Lil's Camp," - interviewing the former campers and reading stories they had written when they were young girls - I "met" BusEye over and over again. The stories about him were wonderful and to hear women in their 70's and 80's laughing as they recounted in vivid detail different experiences they remembered about BusEye, left quite an impression on me. One such story was how the girls would wake up in the morning and exit their cabins on Old Screamer Mountain, to find a tree shimmering in the sunlight - BusEye had hung hundreds of individual Hershey Kisses on the branches of a tree; they all say it was a sight to behold. I think it is wonderful that an imaginary creature is still delighting these women decades later.
With BusEye, anything was possible.
When choosing a name for my production entity, I wanted something personal that would put a smile on my face and hold the meaning of what my goals and intentions were in the film projects I planned to produce. As "Miss Lil's Camp" is my first documentary and has taken me on such an incredible journey, both personally and professionally, I wanted to honor Lillian Smith and her amazing ideals, using BusEye as my tool, much as she did at Laurel Falls Camp.
