i’m a soul brother from brooklyn, n.y. born during the 70’s era of black culture and the black power movement. my dad (r.i.p big john patton) helped to pioneer the soul-jazz music genre. his instrument was the organ. my mom (davene) is a fashion designer and currently owns her own line of jazz aroma-therapy products that use only natural ingredients – called “simply davene”. i’ve lived many places but mainly new york city, fayetteville - north carolina, los angeles and oakland – california.
hiphop culture and music are my first passion. i grew up studying the originators like herc, flash, hollywood, aj scratch, cold crush, bambaataa and the list continues. my generation was most prominent during the 1988 golden age with rakim, the juice crew, krs1, native tongue and the list doesn’t stop. i began as a graffiti artist, then break-dancing, to my main passion as a turntablist/dj. i also study the jazz and soul artists from the harlem renaissance era through the 70’s. i play the drum machine like an instrument without the sequence/metronome/record feature – something only a rare few producers do. this gives my music an organic, soulful touch that i used to make my first album, “godfood: the break-fast”. my lyrics as an emcee are simply honest. my first ep in ‘99, entitled “don’t call me john” on abb records, introduced my demo to the world of underground hiphop music. after experiencing many obstacles and frustrations with the commercialization of hiphop music i took a hiatus from making music until 2004.
my other passion is guiding young people. i consider myself a high school teacher but i currently teach classes at u.c. berkeley on black culture and hiphop culture. i enjoy coaching younger emcees and djs who are interested in the roots and history of hiphop and black culture.
lastly, i have been honing my acting skills and look to be seen in some up and coming film projects. i am also writing film screenplays with my partner in crime, troy warwell. i consider myself an artist not an entertainer and cherish my creative control. my art has great meaning for me and the community i represent. thus, my latest music can only be found as limited editions on cdbaby or online so as to bypass the corporations who unfortunately are more concerned with selling units. if you take the time to read this and would like a free copy of my latest album, send me your address in a message and i will get a copy out to you. live in the moment and remember every experience is designed to bring you closer to your true “self” – the spirit or god within.
one love,
superstar quamallah a.k.a quame

"Clever Jeff - JazzHopSoul album(1994), a definite classic and the best album to fuse Jazz, Soul and Hiphop. However the Record Label, Quest/Warner Bros., didn't know how the handle or market this unique album that only Clever Jeff could make with his skill as a bass guitarist, learned emcee, producer and son of Jazz singer, Sondra Wiggins."
