Though "Rock/Emo/Post-Hardcore" may seem like a mouthful when describing Nashville band The Twilight Drive, this multilateral fusion of sound would be impossible to contain in one specified genre. "It isn't something you've heard before," proclaims noted industry mogul Joe Sullivan, "it's more like everything you've ever heard all put together." And just as everyone is raving, a blend of everything kick-ass about the rock world infused with a unique presence all their own is exactly what you get with The Twilight Drive's brand new EP.
May of 2008 will finally see The Twilight Drive's long awaited freshman EP, "What Keeps You Safe Doesn't Keep You Alive." The album will include six powerhouse tunes, all originals spearheaded by the vocal stylings of lead singer Brian Staverosky. Working together with Matt Dimodica (lead guitar), Daniel Green (rhythm guitar), William Presley (drums), and their newest member Josh Rosa (bass), the group delivers energy driven performances that, no doubt, stem from their experience on the stage. Playing along side bands such as Britain's indie-rock group KOLO, and Tooth and Nail veterans Secret and Whisper and Far-Less, The Twilight Drive, although barely a year old, has the industry sitting up and taking notice for being able to hold their own in the spotlight.
Formed in the Spring of 2007, The Twilight Drive was originally comprised only of Brain Staverosky and Will Presley, both Belmont University students. Will reflects, "Brian and I were striving for something big from the very beginning, seeking out members who were as passionate about the music as we were. We found that in Josh, Matt, and Daniel." With all the pieces finally in place, the band combined their musical influences such as Name Taken, Further Seems Forever, The Juliana Theory, and Jimmy Eat World to come up with their own material that was original, creative, and sincere.
The result of their endeavor is the EP "What Keeps You Safe Doesn't Keep You Alive," an appropriate title for the young college students. Brian comments that, "Everyone can relate to that inner conflict, the fight of the sacrifice-- choosing what will go, be it self-discovery or the security of the conventional occupation. It's about throwing out the bullshit, pre-conceived notions about passions that eventually become hobbies and getting the guts up to go with what will truly sustain you." Brian is the living testament to his statement. After three semesters as a Mechanical Engineering major at Kettering University in Michigan, he decided that his lifeblood could only be found in music. It was this decision that led him to Belmont University and put him on a path to forming what is now The Twilight Drive.
With each band member's individual inspirations, the goal of The Twilight Drive's EP is not only to encourage commitment to seeking personal motivators, but to also recognize that each person's emotions play a huge part in the process. "Some would call our music bi-polar," says Brian, "because on the same six-song disc you've got very dark songs mixed in with pop-punk feel-gooders." He blames this vast array of sentiments on the philosophy that a band does not always have to push one concrete message. Brian goes on to say, "Sometimes the message is the emotion, and the music is just there to give that feeling its truest portrayal."
Within the span of a year, The Twilight Drive has transformed from a group of young college students just doing what they loved into a truly cohesive contingency of accomplished musicians. They blend their individual experiences and influences to make a unique sound that this Spring's EP, "What Keeps You Safe Doesn't Keep You Alive," promises to deliver.
