About Me

Michael Keaton, or Mic Grippa as you know him grew up in a trailor park in West Columbia SC. Michael always had a passion for music growing up. He credits his intial intrest in music to his father with introduced him to such artist as BOC, Grand Funk Railroad, Eric Clapton, Led Zepplin, Blondie, Sugar Hill Gang, KC and The Sunshine Band, The BeeGees, Lynard Skynard, Earth Wind and Fire, and many many more. His father also started teaching him to play the guitar at the age of 12. As Michael got older he developed his own taste in music and began to listen to some of the commercially successful rap artist of the 80's. Some of wich included Run DMC, Tone Loc, and the Beastie Boys. In his middle school years Michael took an interest in West Coast rap wich was king of the radio at that time. Some of his favorites were Snoop, Dre, and Tupac. Michael espeically liked the lyrics of the late Tupac Shakur. "Tupac had a unique way of touching his fans. I felt like I could relate to everything he was saying. When I listened to Pac I felt like I could see his world through my eyes. I wanted to do the same thing with my music. I wanted people to see the world through my eyes." With that inspiration Michael decided to become a rapper. In 1995, while attending Brookland Cayce High, Michael meet a fellow student who also shared a deep love for rap music. That students name was Michael Thurmond. Thurmond was a talented freestyler who had no problems teaching Michael everything he knew about the art of freestyling. "Man I sucked. (laughs) Mike didn't care though. He would help me out anyway. We used to rap in class about anything. It didnt matter what I said. I'd rap about signs on the wall. I had to learn to rhyme." (laughs) After a lot of practice and determination Michael became a pretty decent freestyler. 1995 was also the year that Michael wrote his first song. "I started writing songs to any beat I liked on the radio. I had no way to record a song at the time so just kept writing and honeing my skills. In 1999 Michael discovered a program that would allow him to make his own beats on his home pc. This was the birth of So Sick Records and the artist you know as Mic Grippa. "I was trippin! (laughs) I could not believe that you could make beats on a home computer. I was just happy about the fact that I didn't have to write to anyone elses beats anymore. I could create my own music from scratch. I was ecstatic." With no training in music composition or structure Michael began makeing his own beats. "Yeah the beats pretty much sucked at first. I had no idea about structure or bars or any of that. I would just make a drum line and throw a melody over it to rap to. It took a while but I eventually got the hang of it. I basically just learned from studying the beats of my favorite producers." After many years of practice and determination So Sick Records now offers some of the best most affordable beats around. Michael, or Mic Grippa as you know him has become a well rounded rapper/producer that isn't afraid to speak his mind. He is currently working on his debut album named "Down Here" for spring '07 release. Also in the works is the Dirt Road Raw G's album. Mic Grippa is 1/4 of the the group wich includes Hyde, Young Breed and Blo. "I'm workin hard at it. Some people don't take it serious, but to me they are just haters. I eat, sleep, and breathe rap music. At this point its all I know. I have a dream to be successful in this business and I wont stop till I reach my goals. The train is comeing either way. You either get on or get out the way"
