Howz about a hypnotist who can instantly make me a techno/expert at this y'er YouTube hyperbole. Talk about technocratic oaths. Yes folks that's me... lost in cyber space. You experts would tell me a 14 year old child could understand it... but (to para-phrase the late Groucho Marx) "bring me a 14 year old child, I can't understand a thing".
A few political heroes come to mind...... Mandela of course, but also Fidel (will we meet before he pops his clogs?) and, yes, the Venezuelan revolutionary Chavez. Just read news that Bush's arch-enemy Chavez is selling cheap oil to the Mayor of London in order to help subsidise projects for the sick, old and needy.
Another Latin American hero / maverick I kept hearing about during a year in Colombia (in '96) was the Mayor of Bogota... Antanas Mockus. What happened to that guy?
In an attempt to change the culture of motoring in Bogota (I kid you not!) Mockas introduced the city's first zebra crossing. But motorists wouldn't respect it, so he hired mime artists to patrol it. Any motorist who failed to respect pedestrians on the crossing would be confronted by a white faced "mimo" with a big sign saying "Incorrecto". Surreal or what? Bienvenidos a Locombia.
More personal heroes to be added in coming weeks. Meanwhile I shall enjoy a toast and marmite with local hero El Hombre Elastico...
