Hogan Music was established in 1986 and is based in Newbury, Berkshire (close to Reading, Oxford, Basingstoke and Swindon). We are a friendly, well-stocked, general music shop, with car parks nearby.
It is a family business, owned by Barbara and Gerry Hogan and son, Patrick. Their wide experience allows them to cater for musicians, from beginner to the serious professional, either in-store, or via their flourishing mail-order business.
On a day to day basis you can expect to find the store manager, Sam, along with Ashley or Luke in the shop willing to assist you with any of your musical needs.
Sam and Luke are brothers and form part of the Newbury based BritProg band The Wookies. They have been part of the local music scene for many years as part of many various projects. Ashley studies Music Technology at Sixth Form and plays bass with funk band Shotgun.
Hogan Music is also Number 1 for Pedal Steel Guitar in the UK. We keep a range of Pedal Steel Guitars and accessories, all available to order online, or purchase from our Steel Guitar branch situated just outside of Newbury, Berkshire. Our steel guitar expertise is backed by Gerry Hogans lifetime of knowledge on the instrument. Visit www.steelguitars.co.uk for more information.
Albert Lee and Hogans Heroes
Gerry was a member of Country Fever in the ‘60s, and the ‘80s rock n roll band Matchbox. Although universally acknowledged as the doyen of British steel players, Gerry is also an accomplished guitarist. In the mid ‘70s, he was a late arrival to the Fatso line up, which included Brian Hodgson (bass) and Peter Baron (drums). This band, along with keyboard player, Mike Bell, became the basis for Hogans Heroes, who are Albert Lees band on European tours. World renowned keyboard player, Pete Wingfield, replaced Mike Bell in 1999.
Since 1960 Gerry has attained vast experience in all areas of professional music performance; recording, radio and T.V. sessions, live gigs. He was a resident back-up steel player at the Wembley International Country Music Festival for many of the first ten years before appearing in various bands at the show during its last ten years.
Gerry is a regular performer at The International Steel Guitar Convention in St Louis; and for 21 years he also organised and played host at his own annual Steel Guitar Festival in Berkshire. This was a real gathering of the faithful that brought to the British public the cream of players from all over the world, including: Buddy Emmons, Paul Franklin, Hal Rugg, Doug Jernigan, Jeff Newman and Lloyd Green. He is truly a great ambassador for his instrument and for the industry.
Gerry was a member of Emmylou Harris Hot Band on her 1984 European tour. He also played on the Everly Brothers album EB84 (produced by Dave Edmunds), in addition to co-producing a Sonny Curtis album.
Gerry is frequently featured on tours by visiting US acts, notably Heather Myles, and, over the years, he has played recording sessions for artistes as diverse as Jimmy Nail, Tracey Ullman, Pulp, Wet Wet Wet, The Proclaimers, Mott the Hoople and many more......
