2008 NATIVE AMERICAN MUSIC AWARD FINALIST: “FLUTIST OF THE YEAR!”“I’m surprised and honored.” I want to thank my brother and flute mentor Jan Michael Looking Wolf for being a constant source of knowledge and influence on my playing. I’m a very private person who has played music my whole life. When I pick up my instruments, I enter my temple, and it speaks to my spiritual nature. I began playing the guitar at age 10 and quite frankly I can’t remember not knowing how to play. I’ve been playing the Native American Flute since 2003 and found it to be the most spriritually transforming instrument I’ve ever experienced. I have many friends on MySpace who have known me my entire life. It has never been easy. I grew up being a long haird hippy kid in the seventies who never had a dime in his pocket, but had some of the coolest friends on the planet! We had some incredible experiences. I never had the money to buy instruments and usually played guitars that were borrowed from my more fortunate friends. Our circle was a multiethnic melting pot of interesting people. I have lite skin and was considered white by all intense and purposes. Even though I have Native American blood running through my veins it has always been easier to blend with the dominant culture. We were left with few choices. Even though I was not in any way considered to be raised as privileged I will be the first to tell you that I have no idea what it is like to have lived like my dark skinned brothers and sisters who grew up struggling on the reservation. My heart goes out to them. My days are spent in service to others. I share my training as a medical provider serving individuals who are marginalized by society, most recently with my wonderful brothers and sisters of the Grand Ronde Tribe of Oregon. The tribes of the Pacific Northwest hold a very special place in my heart. I enjoy playing guitar and the Native Flute in small venues in the Pacific Northwest because it matches my personality. I’m still a hippy kid at heart and the Pacific Northwest lifestyle is perfect for me. I have just released my new solo CD “Creating Sacred Space” in which I play all of the instruments and wrote all of the narratives in a unique blend of guided ceremony and meditations all surrounded by some groovie music. If you come to one of my gigs, please stop by and “chat.” I love to talk about the soul of the music. I walk daily along the spirit’s path, and without the Creator’s blessing I would truly be left with nothing.
