i work a few shifts a week on a government run radio station that broadcasts from bahrain, a small island off the coast of saudi arabia to our small, distracted community and the region. i use myspace to post playlists, occasional blogs, low-fi recordings of my own and some photography. i swore i wouldn't sign up till i had some thing to sell and now that thing is me. the rules for broadcasting in a liberal muslim country are simple, don't get caught out doing anything you know you shouldn't and so far i haven't. i do it for my friends, i do it for myself, i couldn't possibly do it for the money. we are, like i said, more than a national broadcaster but we operate on the scale of a large-ish community station. my goal is to foster dissent in people's lives in any way, shape or form. we are a very insular people and that is what drives the reaction-ism we are magnets for. the world is a ghetto, the arab states are microcosm of this, everything is built up but nothing is finished. in bahrain we find the suburbs of this particular ghetto. life does not change here and it prepares you for life nowhere else but here. a great man said 'music is the weapon'. i don't know where he heard it but i know it is a fight for independence of which he speaks. naturally then it is to independent music that we should be looking. if you're reading this, and you're in a band, making music of any kind and you think you could do some damage out here then come on down...a free fatwa on the first 100, successful applicants. there are lines i have to draw, most concern vulgarity but if i'm willing to play the cure's 'killing an arab' or george c scott's 'patton monologue' on the radio you can let me worry about that. besides i've been hoarding music for years and what i keep to myself is bittersweet like.i'm binary bill, just call me mr. brownside
