Sahaj Unlimited is a group of Finnish musicians, passionate about the Indian music culture, who came together in 1995 and quickly became known to drive the shyest audience into a wildly dancing throng on their many live gigs around Finland and abroad. Year 2005, it was time to record some of the group´s own favorites, resulting in a listening experience of 12 pieces, ranging from the meditative and devotional hindi bhajan style to the sufi qawwalis, exhilarating urdu-language songs praising the mystical qualities of the cosmos and its creator.
While the main players of Sahaj Unlimited are all professional musicians and many have studied extensively in India, Sahaj Unlimited does not aim at being an authentic Indian music group and its versions of the traditional songs are definitely not carbon copies of the originals.
- We are Finns and also want to bring something of our culture into the mix. We do it our way and though we may have, in the beginning, worried about what the mothership thinks of our little venture, Indians have enthusiastically embraced our style and the record has become an instant hit among our young friends there, laughs one of Sahaj Unlimited´s founding members Kiureli Sammallahti, who sings and plays the accordeon for the group since its humble beginnings.
Sahaj Unlimited´s musical influences are many - from qawwali master Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan to Bollywood film tunes - from Finnish traditional songs to Indian religious ragas. But be the music quiet or explosive, Sahaj Unlimited tries to capture the pure joy of existence itself:
- Devotional music is often considered in the west as heavy and depressing, glorifiying the guilt of the sinner and the huge gap between what´s ideal and what´s the reality. Our mission is to perform bhajans and qawwalis as a celebration of life, bursting with colors, energy, and mirth, tells Sahaj Unlimited singer and harmonium player Tuomas Kantelinen, who is also known as a composer of original music for many Finnish and international movies.
During its 10-year existence, Sahaj Unlimited has continuously performed for audiences in Finland and abroad, including yearly gigs at the most important Finnish ethnic music festivals, concerts in Italy, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.
Sahaj Unlimited has finally released a long-awaited CD to celebrate its full 10 years of rehearsing and performing together. The material draws inspiration from Indian village music and, appropriately, profits go to Nirmal Prem, a centre for orphaned children and destitute women in Gurgaon (near New Delhi), India.
