About Trisha
Trisha’s fascination with the world of art has been as long as she can remember. Growing up in Winnipeg, Manitoba is where she feels she began to develop a solid foundation into this fascinating world.Throughout her pre and post-secondary education, she experimented with various media ranging from watercolour and acrylic painting, to printmaking and sculpture, but never imagined that she would one day be pursuing a career in this field.
Her constant curiosity and imagination, also led Trisha to pursue her interests beyond the arts.In the early 90’s she developed a strong interest in the world of recreation, fitness and nutrition. As a result, Trisha received certification in areas ranging from strength and resistance training programs to post-natal fitness and nutrition.
In 1996, she ventured down yet another creative path.Trisha’s healthy way of living helped her branch out in the spiritual world taking her to the Banff, Canmore area, where she studied alternative healing. She received her first, second and advanced degrees in Reiki, an ancient Japanese healing art.
Trisha’s journey had just begun. These studies and various other workshops relating to personal growth and development, helped her in discovering the true essence of who and where she wanted to be. She realized her passion in 1997 during a pottery and clay building class at the Banff Art Centre. From there, Trisha attended the Kootenay School of Art and Design in Nelson, BC, studying clay and mixed media.
Artist Statement
My work is about diversity, with a primary focus on experimentation and playfulness, ranging from basic functional jugs and bowls to non-functional abstracted figures and wall murals. I am attracted to variation in colour and contrast, and therefore much of my work is low fired in Raku and primitive firings, where I am able to achieve these results. With my forms, I strive for a combination of control and spontaneity and my visual associations are meant to speak an abstract language. I want each piece to possess its own distinct character yet maintain a style similar to one another.
I use the electric potter’s wheel for the majority of my functional pots; however, my preference in terms of technique is hand building. There is no limit as to what I am able to create.
If I had to describe my style in two words, I would say “whimsical†and “uniqueâ€. This particular style allows me to keep my work fresh and I am able to maintain an open mind, which for me personally is very important.
Within the last few years, my work has represented more of a natural and organic style focusing mainly on an environmental theme. I have strong influence having lived in the Rockies and I am fortunate to have been surrounded by majestic landscapes and fresh air. I have developed a strong appreciation and respect for the area in which I lived and am able to express in my work.
