J.Mathis, artist/writer/producer, has come a long way from his humble beginnings in his hometown of Birmingham, Alabama. Realizing his voice at a young age, he began by singing with an acappella group at weddings, malls, sporting events, and anywhere else he could.
His first big break occurred in 1999 when he received his first artist/writer recording contract from super-producer Dallas Austin (D.A.R.P.) and Capitol Records in Atlanta, Georgia. Of this experience, J. says, "It was an unbelievable learning experience for me. Dallas and all the D.A.R.P. writers took me in and showed me the ropes about recording and writing in a real studio."
In 2002, J. signed a publishing deal with Warner Chappell Music, a division of Warner Brothers. Since then, J. has worked with many great producers such as P. Diddy, Rodney Jerkins, Keith Thomas, and Teddy Riley. He has also had the great opportunity to work with R and B artists such as Brandy, 3LW, and K. Young, and Rock/Alternative artists Will Owsley, David Ryan Harris, and Tom Luce.
J. Mathis matches the vast kaleidoscope of his influences (Sam Cooke, Stevie Wonder, Freddie Mercury, and Prince) with his own unique tone, style, and soul.
