'First I lived the songs, then I wrote them. After that I had to sing them.'
Tom Roger writes songs that merge melodic intensity, lyrical awareness and superb musical craftsmanship. Touring Ireland, the UK, and South Africa he has gained recognition as a brilliant lyricist, an emotive singer, and an accomplished guitarist. Now he turns to release his debut album out into the Northern autumn.
Producer Brian Connor (Van Morrison, Mary Coughlan) called on some of the most respected rock musicians in Ireland for the recordings, including drummer Robbie Casserly (Elvis Costello, Mark Knopfler) and bass player Nick Scott (Van Morrison, Sinead O'Connor). After hearing the tracks, engineer Alastair McMillan (Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, U2), volunteered to mix the album, later to be mastered by legendary Greg Calbi (Norah Jones, Dylan) at Sterling Sound in New York.
Obviously Embraced is a variegated album, with a remarkable consistency of quality. Nearly each of the twelve songs is somebody's favourite track. The title track has been called a masterpiece, with its timeless melody and spellbinding, epic story, Obviously Embraced is a high-point on concerts. 'Timelock' is another favourite, with a Lennonesque vocal ring and moving lyrics. A listener reports: 'I haven't felt so strongly about a song since Imagine'.
'It comes as no surprise that Tom Roger writes good songs' Cape Argus wrote when he toured South Africa and referred to his broad musical background. He has studied classical guitar with some of the worlds best guitarists and has written music for rock bands, string quartets and chamber orchestras. Now he has come full circle and writes songs where the musical expression is determined by the lyrics, following and enhancing their every mood and colour, whilst keeping true to the songwriter's simple form.
As a gesture to the many Irish involved, the album was released first in Ireland this spring. Hotpress, Ireland's front rock magazine wrote: 'We suspect that his lovely blend of melody and commentary will earn him loads of fans'. The launch tour, visiting Dublin, Cork, and Belfast, featured in a mini series on Norwegian national radio. He has been taken in by Irish and British musicians. As the first frosty nights descend, Tom Roger takes the next steps to release Obviously Embraced in Norway.
Superb craftsmanship. By turns haunting, touching and tragic, the poetry of his music is undeniable Cape Argus, Cape Town
