Guitarist Johnny Marr and oddball lyricist Steven Morrissey joined forces in Manchester back in 1982. Deliberately choosing the nondescript name of The Smiths, the group was completed by Andy Rourke (bass) and Mike Joyce (drums).
The band went on to become the most important British group of the 1980's and The Smiths continue to be hugely popular today.
