Drew, Rene and Cher.
I have a wide range of musical tastes, which were fostered in large part by my high school singing coach, Harry Oka, a gem of a man and a powerful role model. He had us singing rock, pop, show tunes and a huge variety of artists. My favorite albums include Days of Future Passed (Moody Blues), Israel Kamakawiwo..ole's Facing Future with his rendition of Over the Rainbow, Gustav Holst's "The Planets," the the Layla album by Derek and the Dominos. I also have a love of classical country music fostered by my mother, including Gentleman Jim Reeves, Loretta Lynn, George Jones, Johnny Cash, and Hank Williams, among others. I love to sing and Karaoke is a passion. My favorite song to sing? Probably One Headlight by the Wallflowers, with Nights in White Satin a close second. Picture, with Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow is a great duet.
I absolutely adore Drew Barrymore, Rene Zellweger and Cher. I would be Cher's boytoy for any weekend. For some reason I am attracted to unique, wonderful voices, which they all have. For the most part I see movies that my children enjoy.
I collect Alaska history books. My prized possession is a full set of the Harriman Alaska Expedition, and two copies of Under Mt. St. Elias. I read voraciously for my job on business process management, fatherhood, performance measurement, and various motivational topics. For pleasure I read a wide range of topics. I have studied Bartolome de las Casas, loved Mitch Ablom's three recent books, and devoured "A Season of Life"--the life story of Reverend Joe Ehrman. I am currently reading Piston-the story of Pete Maravich.
Mom, absolutely. She is gone now but she made me who I am. Ruby Gaston, definitely. She befriended my family when we were in need and helped us a lot. Her friendship was phenomenal. My friend Charles Stuart, who is a great dad and advocate for children, and the Reverend Ehrman, for his life, are also personal inspiration for me.
