I'd like to meet:
There are so many things in life that are fun. Coffee is one of them... wouldn't you agree??Here are some of my favorites starting with Thessoloniki..
THE BEST (coffee, weather, conversation). This place was the first cafe I went to in Thessoloniki and I went there every day. It was on the sidewalk of a fairly busy street so there were no great views of anything other than cars and pedestrians... but it was magical. The moment I got there no tables were available, but several older gentlemen pulled an extra chair to their table and invited me to sit. Conversation was robust, and gave new meaning to the English phrase "It's all Greek to me!". There was nothing for me to say anyway... I just laughed when they laughed, watched the ladies they watched, and had an all round good time. Coffee was server in a 3 cup pot, and the cookies were edible.
The only place in Brasov for coffee at 7:30. I am used to getting up early and going out, but it seems not everyone is. Most of the time I would just walk down to an all night kiosk near the bus stop and get a cup of Nescafe. I did eventually find this place that opened at 7:30. Good coffee, and I was always the only one there.
Budapest maybe? Yes,I am sure it is. Budapest is divided into two places by the Danube... Buda and Pest (oh I hope I am saying that right, correct me if I am wrong). Not sure what side of the river I was on, but I am certain that the best coffee was always on the other side. Budapest... what a grand city. It felt reserved, had fantastic public areas, and the massive ornate buildings so big they could swallow you up. I didn't get swallowed up and I don't remember how the coffee was.
The little wax cats for my
daughter that I bought at a market in Luxembourg. I am not one to buy much on the trip simply because I travel very light thought these were worth it. Luxembourg is clean and quaint and not overly large. You may laugh at that understatement if you are familiar with it, but I have to tell you that the biggest city I have every lived in is no bigger than 4000 people. I am hoping to someday soon live in a city like this. It is a fond dream of mine. By the way, everywhere I went there had excellent coffee!
Somewhere in Romania... Cluj maybe, or even Bucharest. I have no memory of this place (a line from Lord of the Rings). I will say that outside of the tourist areas I did have some problem getting a good cup of coffee. That was more than made up for by the fact that the Romanian people as a whole are the most interesting, 'attractive' and introspective people I have met. It is such a big and diverse country too... those of us from North America are used to that so it is easy to feel at home I think.
