About Me

Dr. Marcus Nelson is currently the Deputy Superintendent of Instruction and Student Services in the Judson Independent School District, a suburb of San Antonio, Texas. In this position he supervises the campus principals and serves as the chief academic officer for the districts’ 22,000 students and 1,300 classroom teachers. Since his arrival in 2005, this urban school district has tripled the number of campuses that received “Recognized” status according to the Texas Education Agency for student achievement on state and federal testing.Dr. Nelson is a native of San Antonio, Texas and a graduate of Converse Judson High School. In 1994, Nelson added an undergraduate degree in Secondary Education from Abilene Christian University (Abilene, Texas). While establishing himself as a secondary school expert, Dr. Nelson obtained several graduate degrees including two Masters and a Doctoral degree from Texas A & M University (Commerce, Texas). A highly sought after public speaker, Dr. Nelson inspires his audiences to personal and organizational change, growth, and an appreciation for hard work.Dr. A. Marcus Nelson has quickly ascended to the top ranks as an educator. He has blazed an impressive trail of academic and professional achievement, which led him to John B. Connally High School where he served as principal from 2001-2004 in the Pflugerville Independent School District (A suburb of Austin, Texas). In his first year as principal, Connally High School sky-rocketed to one of the lowest drop-out rates in the state of Texas. With only three students on the drop out list (68 students the year before) at the end of Dr. Nelson’s first year, Dr. Nelson and his staff completed over 150 home-visits to students with truancy issues. Dr. Nelson has a firm understanding of curriculum and instruction as well. In fact, Connally High School became a “recognized” campus by the Texas Education Agency in 2002 after being “acceptable” the year prior to Dr. Nelson’s arrival. Over the course of his career, Dr. Nelson has served as an elementary fifth grade teacher, high school math teacher, middle school vice principal, and high school assistant principal, and Director of Secondary Schools. While working in Austin, Texas, Dr. Nelson began a stint as host of the teen radio talk show, “TEEN SCENE”. The radio show aired each Saturday from 2 p.m.-4p.m.on KAZI 88.7 FM. Dr. Nelson has been featured in several newspapers, magazines, and television news shows for his vibrant style of school leadership and passion for motivating and encouraging educators, parents, and students.
