i like anything that is big budget, populated by empty celebrities (as opposed to serious actors), and has a lot of animals, explosions, cars, animation, fast cut action sequences, period representation, or any combination of the previous. a big tom cruise grin always helps.
Television:
weather on the 1s, "previously. on.." aka lost, nip/tuck (even though I've never seen it), a daily show, dirty jobs, the undercover hippo... and anything narrated by the cold case voiceover guy.
Books:
national geographics
adventure books
survival guides disguised as fiction.
