Discussing my lady problems with Larry the Donkey at Lane Farms deep into the night. Two drinks, no more, no less. When the hot waitress at Dargan’s asks me out. When the hot girl at the tattoo shop turns me down and I don’t care. The feeling lifting weights gives you. Learning to pray and meditate. The feeling of getting good wood on a baseball. The scent of a woman’s hair. Watching movies with Jake or Luke. God’s soft “voice” at night. Barely escaping the on rushing tunnel of darkness that fills my eyes when my band plays too hard too long. Finishing a painting. Haiku contests with Christina, Dave and Ann. Gin & Tonic, long, slow kisses, the back of a woman’s knee. The California Angels, full moons rising over the mountains, lyin on the cold sidewalk, lookin at the stars, talking shit about exes. Feeding ducks at lake Los Carneros, fish tacos at Su Casa, BBQ with Gabe. Singin songs at church, dancing to James Brown with Mitch’s girl, killin time, playin trivia at the Press Room or Old Kings. The penguins at the zoo follow your hand’s shadow like a fish, bare feet on grass, good shrimp creole. Letting anger drive you without driving you crazy, leaving notes for her when she doesn’t know it’s me doing it, little boys playing little league on little fields, long walks in the hills looking at cool lizards. Finding that Lou Rawls record I wanted used for two bucks, goin to a show with Tim and Greg, shootin pool with Ryan… life is never as bad as it looks on paper.
