"Selena Mars is one of few artist today whose songs create a complete world of their own. Discover her now!" -Phil Strongman, Rock&Roll journalist (NME/HiFi Choice), author, and filmmaker.Selena Mars has been featured in several British TV shows and films. "It's fun. I was also doing gigs as a back-up singer and some modeling when I decided it was time to start focusing on my own music, my writing," says the multi talented Mars. "Although I've done loads of different things in the performing arts realm, music is my first love and I never could quite shake it," says Mars, who sang in her first competition at the age of 10. Recorded in NYC, her self released debut ep "Empty" produced by Grammy nominated Alex Elena (Alice Smith), is being well received in the College Rock community as are her energetic live performances. With a distinct and sultry voice, striking beauty, and honest introspective lyrics, she is poised to make a startling impact on both sides of the Atlantic in 2008.Part of what makes Selena unique is her eclectic nature that is mirrored in her choice of diverse projects and producers that she collaborates with. She's gained strong street cred in both alternative rock-having recorded a guest vocal on "Hurt Me", a single produced by Derek O'Brien of Social Distortion, and in pop collaborating with platinum award winning Chiba Antoine (Beck/Destiny's Child) for several projects, including songs for the feature film "The Evening" starring Meryl Streep. Selena has also collaborated with Talvin Singh (Madonna/Bjork), Imani Coppola (for "Empty"), also Chris Flam(Public Enemy/Korn) and En Esch of KMFDM for a Rawkus Records compilation. Admitting the studio "has a certain magic", she is very passionate about performing live and loves touring. She's been on the road with acts like Lisa Loeb, Donna Lewis, No Mercy, and many more. Her musical influences are broad; ranging from Bjork to Nina Simone, Radiohead, Grace Jones, Massive Attack, Cessaria Evora, Sly and the Family Stone, and the Pixies to name a few. Her own sound blends elements of retro rock and modern, catchy pop type hooks. Her lyrics drawn from experiences both happy and some less so. She also used a lot of vintage recording gear and live instruments to make this EP hence the warmth and somewhat retro sound. "People are always surprised to learn there is a real violin and real grand piano on these songs."Mars is someone who very much likes to do her own thing. "I'm much better at being myself than trying to conform into something. At the end of the day I have to be true to myself." Although Selena is currently busy working on several different studio projects and collaborations, she will be playing a few shows this summer.
