Festival competitors shovel spears for victory

Stockton resident Samuel Vannasopha joined the competition on a whim Saturday, just minutes before the contest began.
In the bout's waning minutes, as other competitors still were stuffing their beet-red cheeks with water and vegetables in vain, the 24-year-old munched leisurely on his food.
Afterward, he seemed a little disappointed with his performance.
"I was nervous," Vannasopha said. "Plus, I ate before I went up there. I wasn't prepared."
