I started this myspace initially to help find a home for my deaf dalmation puppy - "Smudge", There has been a lot of support for little Smudge in his quest to find the perfect home, but some how none of the homes on offer where quite right and in the end I decided that I just couldn't part with him.
The British Dalmatian Club advise that all deaf puppies be put to sleep!!! They claim that deaf dogs are aggressive, can't be trusted or trained, and will eventually break your hearts. This is complete rubbish, Smudge is now 6 months old and unless you were told, you would have no idea that he was deaf. I have trained him to sit, stay, lie turn around. He runs off the lead in fields & woodland and always comes back to me when he sees my command. Of course you have to be careful near roads as he can't hear the danger but would you let a hearing dog near a road off the lead? I certainly wouldn't.
Smudges' deafness is caused by a genetic defect, which is known to affect Dalmatians. At 6 weeks of age they have a BAER hearing test to determin whether or not they can hear and unfortunetly in most cases if they are deaf, they aren't even given a chance and are put down before their lives have even begun.
What about a hearing aid?. In recent years hearing aids have become increasingly sophisticated, but at the bottom line all aids are merely sound amplifiers. They boost sound so that any residual hearing can better detect the sound. Since most congenital deafness in animals is pigment-associated, and the ear is totally deaf, no amount of amplification makes the sound available. Thus in these cases an aid would never be of benefit.
The British Dalmatian club are arrogant and ignorant to lead people into believing that deaf dogs are incapable of leading a full and happy life and I am here to support anyone who requires guidance/information on deaf dogs.
