I'd like to meet:
There are many people That i would like to meet. Most of the people that I most admire and that inspire me the most have past away, but have left there mark on me and the world. these are the wolds icons that i would have loved to meet.As an intellectual its important to note that these individuals are not who i choose to be, but they share certain passions and goals as i do. My favorite Zen poem best descibes this "Do not seek to follow in the footsteps of the men of old; seek what they sought"
KOFI ANNAN
Kofi Annan, one of my favorite icons that is still living, was born on April 8, 1936 in Ghana. He served as the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations from January 1, 1997 to December 31, 2006, serving two five-year terms. His rank at the time can be considered the equivalent of that of the President of the united states, making him perhaps the most powerful, educated, and influential Black man of our time to hold a position that not only demanded the respect , but also lead and acted as a spokesman for the United nations. The UN (United nations) is made up of 50 countries. Its amazing that A man of African descent can be allowed to represent such a large mass of countries outside the US, but yet within the US ignorance will not allow others to see beyond there limited view of the world. One of my favorite sayings by Kofi Annan was what he said he had learned from his expeirience at the elite Mfantsipim school. He said the school taught him "that suffering anywhere concerns people everywhere".
GANDHI
Gandhi was a major political and spiritual leader of India and the Indian independence movement. In India, he is recognized as the Father of the Nation. October 2nd, his birthday, is each year commemorated as Gandhi Jayanti, and is a national holiday. He was the pioneer of Satyagraha—the resistance of tyranny through mass civil disobedience, firmly founded upon ahimsa or total non-violence—which led India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. At the onset of the South African War, Gandhi argued that Indians must support the war effort in order to legitimize their claims to full citizenship, organizing a volunteer ambulance corps of 300 free Indians and 800 indentured labourers called the Indian Ambulance Corps, one of the few medical units to serve wounded black South Africans. To be honest this man has done so much for Indians and Black south africans and dedicated himself to the preservation of life for me to name just one accomplishment would be a down-grade on what this man has done for the world. On January 30, 1948, on his way to a prayer meeting, Gandhi was shot and killed.Gandhi dedicated his life to the wider purpose of discovering truth, or Satya.Gandhi stated that the most important battle to fight was overcoming his own demons, fears, and insecurities. Gandhi summarized his beliefs first when he said "God is Truth." He would later change this statement to "Truth is God." Thus, Satya (Truth) in Gandhi's philosophy is "God".
SAINT MAURICE
Very few african Americans know about Black icons that existed before the racial tentions of our modern times. The achivements of great men of African descent have been all been either kept secret by the powers that be or lost in the caos of the past. Men like ST. Maurice, not only one of the greatest military leaders of the Catholic church, but a Black Roman Elite Soldier later declared by the church as a SAINT.. They never taught u that in school did they, one of romes most selebrated heroes-soldiers was a black man.He was the leader of the legendary Roman Theban Legion in the 3rd century. According to the hagiographical material the legion, entirely composed of Christians, had been called from Thebes in Egypt to Gaul to assist Maximian, which they did valiantly. However, when Maximian ordered them to harass some local Christians, they refused and Maximian ordered the unit punished. Every tenth soldier was killed, a military punishment known as decimation. More orders followed, they still refused, due in part to encouragement from Maurice, and a second decimation was ordered. In response to their refusal to use violence against fellow Christians, Maximian ordered all the remaining members of the 6,600 unit executed. Now thats keepin it real.In folk culture he has become connected with the legend of the Spear of Destiny, which he is supposed to have carried into battle; his name is engraved on the Holy Lance of Vienna, one of several relics claimed as the spear that pierced Jesus' side on the cross.
LAO TZU
Lao Tzu became an important cultural hero to subsequent generations of Chinese people. Ostensibly, Lao Tzu's wise counsel attracted followers, but he refused to set his ideas down in writing, worrying that written words might solidify into formal dogma. Lao Tzu laid down no rigid code of behavior. He believed a person's conduct should be governed by instinct and conscience. He believed "simplicity" to be the key to truth and freedom. Lao Tzu encouraged his followers to observe, and seek to understand the laws of nature; to develop intuition and build up personal power; and to wield power with love, not force. Lao Tzu's work, the Tao Te Ching, is one of the most significant treatises in Chinese philosophy.Lao Tzu developed the concept of "Tao", often translated as "the Way", and widened its meaning to an inherent order or property of the universe: "The way Nature is". He highlighted the concept of Wei wuwei, or "action without action". This does not mean that one should hang around and do nothing, but that one should avoid explicit intentions, strong wills or proactive initiatives.
BIG MEECH
Co. Founder of The BLACK MAFIA FAMILY(BMF)
Demetrius "Big Meech" Flenory doesn't just walk into the club. He arrives. The first sign he's coming: the cars. They coast to the curb like supermodels down a runway. Bentleys and H2s, Lambos and Porsches. And, when the crowd swells to full ranks, tour buses. In front of clubs from Midtown Atlanta to South Beach Miami, the streetlights bounce off the million-dollar motorcade, and it's blinding.David Stuart THE BOSS: Demetrius "Big Meech" Flenory made himself a legend. As Meech likes to say, all members are family: "Everybody moves like brothers. Everybody moves as one." But as with any entourage, there's a definite hierarchy. Pushing into the crowd (if that was possible), you'd first find the guys hovering on the fringes, moving with a slightly menacing sway. Go deeper, and the vibe starts to change. Guards come down. Egos edge up. Keep going and you encounter a steady calm. The aura is one of jaded confidence and quiet control. That's when you know you've reached Meech. The association of BMF members and high-level leadership with famous rap stars and their own moves towards hip-hop stardom began to garner attention at the time of the organization's disruption in late 2005.BMF commands a high level of respect in the hip-hop community, and even though they have remained out of the public eye for years, their influence extends throughout the hip-hop community and there is an almost unspoken code of respect and fear associated with the group for rappers not under their umbrella."You have a problem talk it out first, stop snitchin".
