About Me

Profile Edited by MPS MySpace EditorDickinho da Silva is the artistic name of Dick van Lokhorst , born at the 26th of June 1957 in Woerden, The Netherlands. His Brazilian sister-in-law Veronica calls him always Dickinho, which is portuguese for Dicky. Da Silva is part of the last name of his wife Roqueline da Silva Santos. This, together with his passion for Brazilian music, explains his choice for the rhythm of Dickinho da Silva. As a child Dickinho started to play the organ. In between the age of about 9 and 13 he took lessons from Frits Heil in Amstelveen. At that time Dickinho played already, together with his older brother Jan van Lokhorst on guitar, at weddings and family-parties. As a teenager Dickinho was more busy with sports than with music. But after he finished his history study at the university of Utrecht in 1982 and he couldn't find a job, he started to make music again. He changed to piano, fender rhodes and synthesizer and joined the popband "Effe Wenne". Although he took some lessons now and then, in 1983 for example he took jazz-piano lessons from the great dutch pianoplayer Henk Elkerbout, he mainly learned to play the piano and keyboard by self-tuition. In the meantime Dickinho started to work in the ICT to be able to support himself. In 1994 he decided to give up his job and signed up as a sailor on a yacht named "Freya". For one year he sailed with the owner of the yacht Willem Hofstede from Eembrugge in the Netherlands to Salvador Bahia in Brazil. In this year they called in at ports in England, Spain, Portugal, Madeira, Canary Islands, Mauretania, Senegal, Guinee Bissau and via the island Fernando de Noronho arrived at Natal, Brazil in march 1995. In Salvador-Bahia Dickinho left the boat and stayed there for more than one year. To support himself he teached english at a private school and played the piano in restaurants and the big shopping centre "Iquatemi". It was in Salvador-Bahia, where the musical heart of Brazil beats loudly, where he met his wonderful wife Roqueline da Silva Santos for the first time. In 2000 Dickinho took some singing lessons and started to sing mainly in portuguese. On this website you are able to listen to some attractive brazilian songs, arranged and sung by Dickinho. Besides his passion for Brazilian music(MPB), Dickinho has a passion for jazz, salsa, soul, pop and all kinds of fusion. One of is his most favourite musicians still is trumpeter Miles Davis, one of the twentieth century's great creative artists. One of his favourite composers is the brazilian Tom Jobim, famous for songs like Garota de Ipanema, Corcovado, Desafinado, Dindi, Águas de Março etc.etc.
