The Westside Mural Project

About Me

The Westside Mural Project consists of artists, educators, students, community leaders, and young professionals seeking to honor the diversity of Westside Long Beach and empower its youth through art and education.
The goal of the Westside Mural Project is to revitalize a blighted area as well as engage youth in activities that foster unity, pride, and creativity to further contribute to the community.
We are working in collaboration with Cabrillo High School, 7th District Youth Council, and local professional artists, combining public and private resources, toward improving the quality of life for all community members, particularly the youth comprising 25% of the neighborhood’s population. The Westside Mural Project intends to provide youth with a positive way to interact in the community, beautify the neighborhood and deter graffiti, and instill pride in their surroundings.
We will be working to create a mural visually reflecting the histories and strengths of various ethnic and cultural groups that make up the Westside community. Local youth will be involved with the design and production of the mural while adults will supervise and facilitate this process. The site of the mural will include the wall on the west side of Santa Fe Avenue, between 23rd Street and 25th Street. Located in the heart of the Westside, the mural will be a testament to what neighborhood residents can achieve collectively.

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

STUDENTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS

Students will gain an understanding of the ethnic history, present conditions, and potential future Westside Long Beach through a series of workshops that consists of two phases.

The first phase will take place prior to painting the mural to set fundamentals and principals of the mural project. This will include drawing and painting basics with interactive discussions about the West Long Beach history, cultural and ethnic histories, and current issues.

The second phase will take place during the actual painting process where we will meet with the students before or after each painting session. This phase will include activities with mediated discussions, critiques, and reflections throughout the process.

The objective of these workshops is for youth to produce a series of sketches and paintings that depict their surrounding community dealing with the themes: Present Situation, Present Culture, Future Vision, and Memorial for Victims of Youth Violence. Students will then create a final visual concept for each theme that will be painted on the mural.

The completion of the mural and workshops will culminate in a neighborhood celebration and award ceremony for project participants.
