Telegraph Avenue, Berkeley

Telegraph Avenue sending an SOS to the world....I am an Old Blue.

About Me

Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley has been a hot bed of action. The Anti-War movement during the sixties was synonymous with Berkeley. During my time the avenue and the University of California was full of freaks and street people. The Hate Man, The Polka Dot Man, Stony Burk, Hare Krishnas, Street Preachers, Moonies, Sproul Plaza, Zellerbach Auditorium, Oskie the Golden Bear Mascot, The Cal Marching Band, Blondie's Pizza, Rasputin's Records, Amoeba Records, Moe's Books, Shakespeare's Books, now defunct Cody's Books, The Mediterannean Cafe, Street Musicians with all the richness that the University has to supply. People's Park was another mainstay, shortly name Ho Che Minh Park. On graduation day, 1980, the police shut off the power to People's Park as the bands were too loud. The street people had a riot. It was fun to stand between the freaky streeters and the cops. What a way to end my tenure.

My Interests

British Blues. Alternative/Experimental music. Cinema. Surfing.

I'd like to meet:

ROBERT HUNTER, lyricist for the Grateful Dead. JIMMY PAGE, ERIC CLAPTON, JEFF BECK, JOHN MAYALL, ROBERT PLANT, JOHN PAUL JONES, WERNER HERZOG, NEIL YOUNG, DAVE MASON...many others, like BILL NELSON of BE BOP DELUXE, his guitar does not lie! The man in the default picture is MARIO SAVIO, the Berkeley student who stood on the police car in Sproul Plaza on December 3rd, 1964, founding the Free Speech Movement at Berkeley. Years later he was a math professor at Sonoma State University. I got to know him, and we had lunch a couple of times and had some great talks. He would also come into the bookstore where I worked. Mario died in November of 1996. I went to the memorial at the steps in Sproul Plaza. His wife flagged me down afterwards and invited me to the reception. I was very honored. I met his father who was a fine man. But I will always remember Mario's comment to me. He patted me on the shoulder and said, "I know that whatever you do you will do well." So, I am very glad I got to meet Mario Savio.

Music:

Life on the street means BLUES. British specifically. JOHN MAYALL AND THE BLUES BREAKERS, ERIC CLAPTON, JEFF BECK, JIMMY PAGE,(YARDBIRDS), DAVE MASON, STEVE WINWOOD, (TRAFFIC), and what goes along with that process. I like alot of the music from bands on Myspace. There is alot of creative invention going on these days. NEIL YOUNG is the folk-rocker who is the mainstay. I cannot forget JERRY GARCIA and the GRATEFUL DEAD.

Movies:

KUROSAWA, FELLINI, BERGMAN, HERZOG. Where The Green Ants Dream, Virgin Spring, Satyricon, Roma, Dersu Uzala, Seventh Seal. MARX BROTHERS and W.C. FIELDS and D.W. GRIFFITH.

Television:

The Flying Nun, Flipper, Kraft Suspense Theater, Malibu U. Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, Star Trek, Lost In Space, The Munsters, Batman, Green Hornet, MASH, One Step Beyond, Camp Runamuck, Patty Duke Show.
