Walker's Point History:
One of the oldest neighborhoods in Milwaukee is on the southside. Walker's Point is Milwaukee's first historic district to be listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and coined "Milwaukee's oldest neighborhood." Today it is a neighborhood with a skyline dominated by steeples, and an assortment of historic homes, art galleries, and a mouth-watering variety of ethnic restaurants.
Walkers Point was named for George H. Walker (October 22, 1811 – September 20, 1866) an American trader and politician who helped found the city of Milwaukee. Walker was born in Lynchburg, Virginia. He moved with his family to Illinois in 1825.
Walker first arrived in Milwaukee on March 20, 1834. In June 1835, he founded the settlement of Walker's Point on the south side of the Milwaukee River and established a fur trading post. In 1846, Walker's settlement combined with two rival villages—Solomon Juneau's Juneautown and Byron Kilbourn's Kilbourntown to incorporate the City of Milwaukee.
George H. Walker served as the city's supervisor, register of the land office, alderman, and as mayor in 1851 and 1853. He was one of the builders of the city's first street car line in 1859. He is buried at Forest Home Cemetery in Milwaukee. George Walker's younger brother, Isaac P. Walker, was a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin from 1848 to 1855.
Located in Walker's Point is one of Milwaukee's most notable landmarks, the Allen-Bradley building, now part of Rockwell Automation which has resting at its top, the largest four-sided clock in the world, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.
Walker's Point has a very vibrant Latino community, offering many Mexican and Caribbean dining options. Stop in at one of these popular establishments and enjoy some of the best food in the city.
Once a swamp land, the Walker's Point area evolved from a residential area to an industrial area over the years. Many of Milwaukee's past leading companies got their start here, such as Harnischfeger and Allis Chalmers.
Although Walker's Point is old, it is no "shrinking violet." The Walker's Point neighborhood is a unique blend of 19th century charm, with a mixture of commercial, residential, industrial, religious and educational buildings.
Today, Walker's Point has a rich cultural heritage that can be seen in the many exciting restaurants and clubs in the neighborhood. The area is best known for its exceptional Latin restaurants and exciting nightlife.

The first bilingual ATM in the state is the drive through at the M&I Bank branch on National Avenue. This location was also the very first branch office for M&I Bank, the largest bank headquarted in the state. Walkers Point is home to the Milwaukee Beer Museum on S. 5th Street.
