Attempts at Synesthesia

About Me

A Five And Dime Ship want to create roller coasters for your mind. Using sound to take the listener on voyages to inner and outer space without sacrificing melody or song structure.A Five And Dime Ship is made up of Chad Rauschenberger former guitar player of 100 Days, drummer James Harwood and guitarist James Adkisson from Seven Percent Solution and Ryan Cechma of Flatpoint/AV on bass.Guitarists Chad and James build intricate layers by creating loops live as they play. Atmospheres, textures, soundscapes, and electronic bleeps, glitches, bells and drones, are coaxed from a large array of effects pedals. Influences range from Sonic Youth, King Crimson, and Radiohead to the more electronic sounds of Aphex Twin, Brian Eno and The Orb with overtones of Pink Floyd, Genesis, and Yes.While the Guitars are spinning Ryan Cechma holds the songs down with huge steady melodic bass while supporting the atmosphere with a variety of tones, experimenting with effects and distortion. With more of a rock and punk background he cites Girls Against Boys, and Voivod as influences and Mogwai as a more recent favorite.James Harwood comes from the drumming school of Bill Bruford. That means while playing the most complex rhythms he has the ability to keep your foot tapping. Besides keeping the beat he also contributes color and texture to the songs with an imaginative use of cymbals and exotic drums. Other Influences include Terry Bozzio, Danny Carey, Nick Mason, and Zakir Hussein. The songs range from delicate intertwined tapestries to swirling damaged breaks and beats to sweeping sheets of distortion and metal melting feedback.A Five And Dime Ship are all about exploring possibilities. The possibilities of instrumental music and the possibilities of where guitars, effects pedals, loops, electronic and acoustic drums and bass can be taken. ..This profile was edited with Thomas' myspace editor™ V2.5

Sounds Like: I dare say most people in their entire life may not hear a better collection of instrumental music. - J-Sin –Smother.net----------The guitar ballet of Chad Rauschenberger and Seven Percent Solution's James Adkisson, A Five and Dime Ship sits low in the water, weighted down with dense inner, outer, and H2O space. Explosions in the Sky, only more explosions, and sea where there should be sky. 3 ½ stars Raoul Hernandez The Austin Chronicle------- If Godspeed's 'Lift Yr. Skinny Fists…' was post-rock's 'Zen Arcade' then this double disc set from Austin's A Five and Dime Ship is post-rock's 'Daydream Nation.' Skyscraper Magazine – D.N.L.-------------Wow… it's apparent from the very start that this massive two-disc set is quite a moving piece of instrumental excellence that builds upon and progresses from the quartet's last full-length of lush, emotional musicianship. In fact, these songs are even more lush and emotional, very effectively recorded and built around repetition and lots of experimental guitar work. Andrew-Aversionline.com------A Five and Dime Ship is embracing Space Rock in a very unique artsy/pop/modern psychedelic way. There are no "normal" vocals and the music overall is more cutting edge/experimental than Seven Percent Solution, which I think is a good thing. Aural Innovations ..29 (October 2004) Carlton Crutcher--------A Five And Dime Ship play sort of dreamy trippy instrumental music for lying on your bed with your eyes closed just drifting, Post Rock? Maybe, I don't really know what that is though so maybe not, I dunno...Damien Mills- for collectivezine.com--------Seven Percent guitarist James Adkisson and drummer James Harwood again weave an encompassing web of melody, at times detouring into a hypnotic Slint/Mogwai repetition. Early Pink Floyd is still a massive reference point, with eerie flutters and drones giving dimension to the patiently developing melodies. Michael Chamey- The Austin Chronicle -----------This is a fantastic release. A Five and Dime Ship are a four piece instrumental outfit specializing in spacey, pedal-laden rock. Five and Dime would fit well on Kranky in between bands like Low and Stars of the Lid. calamityproject.com
