Welcome to TIMES SQUARE!
TIMES SQUARE is centered around guitarist/vocalist
JILL MATTHEWS - the quick witted pioneer of WOMEN'S BOXING who became an immediate hit after becoming the first girl to win the GOLDEN GLOVES and challenging the television media, "Bring me Tyson. I want Tyson!". TIMES SQUARE's line-up also features drummer DAVID ARI, formerly of the DEVIL DOGS and many other popular New York punk bands and rounding out the group, one-time MISFITS guitarist and pioneer of the New York Hardcore scene with his other band THE UNDEAD , bassist/vocalist BOBBY STEELE.
TIME SQUARE's music is primarily written by Jill Matthews - and draws from her experiences as a White, Jewish girl - in a dysfunctional household - going to public school, and growing up in New York City.
At an age when most of us were seeing our first Disney films, Jill's father was taking her to Times Square to see "Women in Prison" movies. Jill developed her philosophy on life from reading Dr. Seuss, and his influence can be heard in her lyrics "I know that you're thinking / that everything's okay / but you must see me everyday / because I got bills to pay" sums up her feelings about going to see the HEADSHRINKER.
The Aquarian Weekly wrote of TIMES SQUARE : Punk for its Cramps-like power, energy and fast, frenetic beat, Matthews adds traces of surf, pop, metal, bubble-gum, riot grrrl and 60's girl group sweetness to a bouncy, Go-Go's meets Shonen Knife sheen to craft eight potent slices of top-grade, Billboard chartable radio fluff.
