The book of Universal Harmony, which no one has read and no one was meant to read, records a tale. In that tale, a fish so huge that it measured many thousands of miles lived in the northern darkness. The fish was changed and became a bird. The bird's back was extensive. When the bird rose up and flew off, its wings were like the clouds over the sky. The bird set off toward the southern darkness -- the Lake of Heaven.
We know this bird, and we know its fate. During its journey, the bird heard beautiful music and flew west to investigate the source. The source was a single hand, plucking a stringed instrument. The instrument had an elegant, elongated neck and a shiny, cherry-red body. The body and the neck were connected by strings. A leather band was connected to the body. The bird was curious and looked closer.
As the bird's beak approached the instrument's neck, the single hand produced a plectrum. The hand began to strike the plectrum against the bottom string, which had a thickness larger than the rest. A low rumbling sound swept out across the land. Then the single hand placed its palm against the bottom string, while still striking the plectrum against the string. A sound that had never before been heard began to echo into the darkness.
The bird was impressed. Believing the instrument contained great power, the bird secured the leather band in its talons and flew off with the instrument in another direction. As the wind brushed the strings, the instrument began to play. A mighty sound rang out, filling the space above and below. And the bird was happy.
Since we were little children, we have heard this story repeated hundreds of times. Scholars tell us that this is the origin story of rock 'n' roll -- a creation myth of epic proportions. However, we know this tale is not just a story for school children, a fantastical explanation for the unexplainable. We know this tale is true.
We know the eagle took the guitar and hid it high in the Himalayan Mountains, where it lay for countless centuries.
