"Success is when opportunity meets skill,
Failure is when fantasy meets reality."
OYO Music Groups recording artists African Mafia have been creating a
buzz as the official first family of mixtapes. The group also known as
"A-Mob" is comprised of 9 biological brothers hailing from the Bed-Stuy
section of Brooklyn, New York. Group "Boss" Mazi O. says that the family
earned the nickname growing up as the nephews of
Brooklyn legend Dr. York. "The haters wanted to paint my father and my
uncle as thugs, so we heard 'Mafia' a lot, and decided to just flip
it to a positive". And thus far they have been successful; their monthly
mixtapes have featured artists like Beenie Man, Heather Hunter,
Lil Ceas, Madd Rapper, Maino, B-Rhaka, Dipsets DukeDaGod and ByrdGangs
NOE, among others.
The African Mafia recently announced on 99.5FM WBAI in New York that
they are now affiliated with Jimmy "Henchmen" Rosemonds Czar Squad
DJ's. Their latest CD "Mixtape Hustlin" displays the Czar logo
prominently on the cover and features several exclusives from The Game,
Rick Ross, Too $hort, Big Gip & Ali, Beloved and others on the Czar
roster. "Although they are not Disc Jockey's in the traditional sense of
the word, their mixtapes have the same power in the streets as a DJ in
the club, and they are definitely building a following" says
Universal/Motown A&R KK Rosemond.
African Mafia's official MySpace page has over 10,000 friends and
averages 1,000 plays per week. According to the groups "Under boss" Du
Kahunaz "MySpace is like the BDS before the BDS, and our spins are only
getting heavier and heavier, they love us right now!" So much so, that a
branch of the African Mafia has been started in Germany.
Currently the brothers are preparing to release a couple more mixtapes
thru OYO Music before finishing work on their major label debut "La
Costa Nostrand". Although they haven't decided on a distributor yet, An
African Mafia rep has been "talking" to executives at Koch, Def Jam,
Universal, TVT, and even VP records. The album is expected to feature
appearances from artists The Game, Chico Debarge, Buckshot, Rell, Lola,
Dina Rae, Saigon, Maino, A-Alikes, Lady Luck, Khia, Gillie Da Kid,
Junior Mafia, new comer Sonnie Carson, and even R&B singer Joe. The lead
single "Code of the Streets" features Dylan Dilinjah of MTV's "Making Da
Band 2", and is scheduled to be serviced to radio next month.
Aside from music and promotions the brothers have been considering their
own reality TV show. Saidah Israel, an executive at OYO Music reasons,
"Just think about what their lives are like, 9 brothers from Brooklyn,
in the music industry, doing mixtapes- Clubs, labels, artists, and of
course, the women. They're everywhere, mingling with everyone." Israel
also adds "but they are concerned about their image, so it is up to
them". In the meantime video clips of The African Mafia can be watched
at YouTube.com or viewed from their MySpace page.
