Sounds Like: It depends on what I'm playing. But I like to stay true to the genre I'm working with. That doesn't mean that won't create fusion between certain styles, but I first and foremost believe in the root's of music, whether it be soul, jazz or rock. Here are some names that definitely helped define who I am as a bassist:
James Jamerson, Bob Babbit, Chuck Rainy, Will Lee, Pino Palladino and many more. I have also been through my mandatory crush on Jaco Pastorious' playing, but found my self drawn further towards the Motown and early R&B sound. I love the crisp woolliness of an old p-bass through and old tube amp, the sound that one will find on most records before 1970.
I have always been a great fan of Steely Dan and have lately adapted a liking for the bass sound on records like "Everything Must Go" and Donald Fagen's "Morph the Cat". An embarrassingly clean yet growling tone with all the natural sounds the instrument makes from playing it.I currently use Dean Markley strings and play MTD and Fender basses through Aguilar cabinets.
