When it comes to having some fine tunes served up to you. “Ads-Phoe” has always been there for Geelong, pushing and educating the different styles of underground electronica. As one of the main pioneer’s of Geelong, he is found playing a fusion of Broken Beats, Electro, Techno, and House, since 2000.
His actual love for dance music started in 1990’s from listening to such artists as Afrika Bambaataa which is known as the Godfather of Hip-hop, and electro funk, and Freddie Fresh for his electro hip-hop sound, which was good for Break dancing. The only way to get this fix was listening to late night radio shows on 3PBS, Triple R, and Triple J, to capture bootleg tapes of some of the freshest styles. This helped Ads-phoe start his quest for fresh beats, and tied into his underlying love for break dancing and graffiti, after a while realizing that he was falling more in love with the depth and complexity of dance music, it was when Australia’s young rave scene was starting to hold its own. It was an easy transition for him to enjoy the wide palette of sounds and styles presented there. Finding himself searching for more electronic artists like Kraftwerk, Aphex Twin, Chemical Bros, Daft Punk, Carl Cox, and Jeff Mills. These were the sounds Ads-phoe wanted to educate and share with the world. Growing up in Geelong, living in the Hip Hop scene was hard, but so was the new adventure of showing what this new underground dance scene had to offer. And the only way he could think of sharing his knowledge and experiences would be, by starting to DJ. Ten years of collecting and archiving music by tape, video, or even just in his head for later recall, had a reason now. To share! To educate!
As a DJ, Promoter, Event manager, and Graphic Artist, Ads-Phoe helped to start the scene in Geelong and the scene in general, in many different ways. “It has always been a quest of mine. I want people to have a better understanding and/or appreciation of electronic music, especially in my hometown. Why should we have to travel the world just to hear new upfront music?, when we can have it here on our own door step.”
This caused Ads-phoe to team up with other local DJ’s to form Dance Party’s within Geelong and Western district towns. Developing parts of the underground dance scene, using Rave’s, the SPACE, & Freeza Dance parties to communicate. Then local bars took notice, then clubs, till running the infamous night called “Lost in breaks” and finally a special mix cd got airplay on Triple J of that style that Ads-phoe was respected for.
“Lost in breaks”, has shared many memories by all that took the chance to follow the journey. Bringing UK International artists like Atomic Hooligan to blow your brains away with his hip-hop skills fused with danceable electronica and bass heavy breaks. Also showing the skills of Australia’s best upcoming stars at that time, like DMC winner DJ Selekt, As well as the winner of UK’s Breaks poll best remix of the year by Sydney sider Bass Kleph, (with his remix of “Feeling kind of strange”.) and the always reliable Lynt, Dj ides, Agent86, Mike Callander, Astro boy, & Brewster B.
Ads-phoe’s new party’s have been started with fellow DJ’s and friends, like “Cassette” a electronica night in Melbourne CBD @ Eurotrash bar, china town with Adam Burnell.
The other night is based down in the very famous coastal town of Torquay, with Finn Whitla, forming “Audio Jackers” a night of everything that rocks ya in style.
