About Me

Composer and media music producer.
Chunky started as a pianist, taking his first lessons at five tears old. He also plays cello and guitar, although not as well. Chunky started working professionally as a keyboard player at seventeen, joining a band to tour the US military bases in Germany. After a stint with a little known band touring Scandinavia he then started working in London studios as a keyboard session player. During this time Chunky wrote and arranged a couple of hit singles and he then decided to concentrate on writing songs rather than the playing.
Chunky now has a couple of private recording studios: One in New York and one on the English Riviera. He split his time between the two places, depending on where the client is located.
Chunky - "I like New York a lot. It's a terrific place and I love the fact that the streets are pretty much all straight lines and at right angles to each other. I used to constantly get lost in London when I was a session player and It's virtually impossible to get lost in N.Y..
Most of the music I have been writing lately has been Dance, but there have also been projects with Funk (Gentle Journey album above) and a more industrial styled music, which is probably the most used music for film and TV."
Chunky Nelson studio uses 'Cubase' and 'Reason' sequencer software. "I have always been a 'Cubase' fan from the start. many people have asked why I don't go over to 'ProTools', well in the beginning it was the cost of 'ProTools, but now I can't see a reason to change. They both appear to be the same programme, but Cubase uses more processing power from the CPU (MAC in my case). These days the computers are so fast it doesn't make much difference and Cubase has midi sequencing running alongside - so I'll stick with it. I use Reason for pretty much all my midi sequencing now days. In fact I often chop up my recorded material and plonk it into the Reason samplers. I can then mix the project from one programme and save the whole project as one file. I love the simplicity of 'Reason'. There are very little choices with the operation of the programme and because of that you just gets on and work with what you've got. It is too easy to faff around with a more complicated programme which gives us twenty ways to raise the volume of a track!"
