About Me

"I'm late, I'm late, for a very important date; no time to say hello, goodbye, I'm late!"

Just like the White Rabbit in the Disney version of Alice in Wonderland, this could be my theme song. In fact, his image is a perfect symbol for my eternal, elusive, and exhausting quest to get everything on my endless "To Do" list accomplished and get where I'm supposed to be on time--as well as my love of rabbits (and other gentle creatures, though I'm especially drawn to the symbolism associated with rabbits ).
As people often tell me, I have "no concept of time," and it's true that I'm often overwhelmed by the feeling that everything is happening at once. For me, time just doesn't seem to progress at a consistent, predictable rate! In fact, (together with Tigger) the White Rabbit could be the poster child for ADHD , a trait which has dominated my life and, in many ways, defined my personality.
According to the Myers-Briggs personality type indicator test I'm an " INFP "--Introverted Intuitive Feeling Perceiving--which, among the 16 different types, comprises less than 1% of the population. So as you can imagine, I've always been perceived as "different" or "a free spirit" (a couple of the kinder descriptions). Yet in my interactions with other people who have ADD (with or without hyperactivity), I've noticed a trend: most of us seem to share the NFP aspect, an observation I've always been curious to verify!
(Click here to take the test and find out your own type. Or take the quick-and-dirty Blogthings version here .)
Like many people with ADHD, I'm told, I also suffer from something called " Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome ," which basically means, when trying to synchronize my body clock with the rest of the world, I suffer from chronic insomnia. When not struggling to "fit in," I keep rather vampirish hours, often climbing into my "coffin" just as the sun's coming up! (I also have a curious aversion to garlic! Could there be a connection?)
Animal companions: Rabbits, a cockatiel, a new baby parakeet (see pics), finches, gerbils
Beliefs and values: Christianity (agnostic/searching), many aspects of Taoism and Zen Buddhism, vegetarianism"To my mind the life of a lamb is no less precious than that of a human being. I should be unwilling to take the life of a lamb for the sake of the human body. I hold that, the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is to the protection by man from the cruelty of man." ~Ghandi

Favorite actors (the short list; there are lots more I admire, but these are the ones I go out of my way to see in any performance they give!): David Warner , Emlyn Williams , Robert Newton , Timothy Spall , Michael Sheen , Alan Rickman , Cyril Cusack , Jonathan Frid, Geoffrey Rush
Click on any of the thumbnails below to view my Flixster profile, view actor profiles, and access my (more) complete list. (Join Flixster to take the "Movie Compatibility Test" and see how similar our tastes in movies are, create your own profile ... and add me as a friend!) . Make Your Actor Wall Flixster .
I'm fascinated by the craft of acting and by character actors in particular; acting was my first career goal, but discovering in drama class that I had paralyzing stage fright put an end to that dream. A career in sign-language interpreting unexpectedly cured me of that particular impediment--it helps to have someone constantly feeding you your "lines"!--but by then it was too late to think about embarking on a theatre career--except in my daydreams. Meanwhile, I admire talented, charismatic, and versatile actors like the aforementioned, who are so adept at transforming themselves into the intriguing characters who stir my emotions and imagination so intensely!
Favorite artists: William Blake , Albrecht Dürer , Thomas Kinkade , Howard Pyle , Arthur Rackham , Frank Schoonover , Susan Seddon-Boulet
Favorite comedians: Monty Python, Peter Cook & Dudley Moore, Craig Ferguson, John Oliver , Jon Stewart, Wanda Sykes
Favorite fictional characters: Long John Silver, Count Dracula, Barnabas Collins, Severus Snape, Mr. Spock, Kwai Chang Caine, Bugs Bunny, Tigger, SpongeBob
I'm a Hufflepuff. Click the "be sorted" link below the icon to find out which House you belong to in the world of Harry Potter:

Favorite spectator sports: Figure skating, fencing
Favorite travel destinations: New York City (to paraphrase Neil Diamond, "[Rochester's] fine, but it ain't home; New York's home, but it ain't mine no more"); Cornwall, UK ; Ireland; Heidelberg and Marburg, Germany; Salzburg, Austria; Bar Harbor, Maine; Cape Cod; the seashore
Favorite words: Numinous, amethyst, saturnine, groovy, cryptic, crikey
Languages "spoken" (other than the obvious!) in order of fluency : American Sign Language (ASL), German, Irish, Spanish, French, Cornish, and Welsh (so far)

My Interests

17/18th-century pirates, tall ships and the sea, Celtic lore, history, philosophy, religion, language, linguistics, onomastics, reading, writing, drawing, calligraphy, typography, bookbinding, paper-making, scrapbooking, rubber-stamp art, stained glass, quilting, walking, gardening, Irish stepdancing (not that I actually have time to do all those things!), moonlight, candlelight, to sleep perchance to dream

I'd like to meet:

God, INFPs, fans of Emlyn Williams (are there any? hello??), the late Emlyn Williams himself (if only), students of Cornish or Welsh (or fluent speakers with the patience to encourage a struggling learner), and other people who share my interests.
If I don't know you already and you'd like to add me as a friend, please send me a message in addition to your request! If I don't receive a message from you and don't recognize you, or it's not obvious to me why you think we should be friends, or your profile is set to private, sorry, but I won't be able to add you. And if your profile takes more than five minutes to start loading some readable text over a 56K modem, I probably won't have the time to wait for it to finish, sorry. (Remember, "I'm late, I'm late, I'm late" ... for something!) I look forward to making new friends, but I value quality over quantity. So if you'd like to be added, I look forward to getting to know you.
And, not to be grouchy about it, but it really drives me nuts being bombarded with millions of bulletins on a daily basis. I don't mind you sending one out now and again if you have something really urgent to let all your friends know, but if you have a blog, I'm probably already subscribed--not that anybody's subscribed to mine yet, hint hint--which is where I'd much prefer to read your daily news updates, surveys, fun quizzes, etc., as time allows. And lately, if it weren't for bad luck I'd have no luck at all, so be forewarned that "chain" bulletins [you know, the "forward this to everyone you know or you're not really my friend" type] will not be responded to.) Thanks for understanding!

(I apologize in advance for any objectionable ads that may appear after playing these videos; this appears to be a MySpace "feature" over which I have no control. However, I've found that reloading/refreshing your screen clears them out.)
