Already as a kid ( longing for the mysterious darkness between trees) he started to draw his own fantasy jungles, while his father hoped to see him as a leftwing striker in a soccer team.
Leaving home at the age of 14, he explored the world in many directions (Iran, Afghanistan, Malaysia, Sarawak, Palawan, New Guinea, Brazil and North Africa from Kenai up to Mauretania). During those travels he developed not only painting and photography but with a talent to impress people, realized slide-shows about wild environments and cultures who are dying out.
His own film " Oronoque " 1974 a thrill seeking true story about two men , Aat and Theo van der Sande, getting lost in the forbidden rainforest triangle between Surinam, Brazil and Guyana, won in ’75 the first price at the Exploration Film Festival in Italy.
Their 90 days and nights during survival struggle without ever seeing any human being, later on described as a bigger thrill then the ‘Blair Witch Project’, is not at all dated.
In the 80's he worked as a reporter for Dutch magazines such as Panorama and Nieuwe Revu. Somewhere in the early nineties he painted walls in Morocco and Spain. These wall paintings up to 50 metres, outside wherever the climate makes it possible, he is most famous for.
It is in this period that he started writing his book “Onopvallend langs de grens” (Camouflaged across the border), an autobiographical novel where he shows no fear describing life in detail. This book, some posters, slide shows and documentaries are still available.

So much exiting material is an adventure to go through and will support you to travel by yourself
At this moment this MySpace is mostly about den Oudens Drawings and Paintings, but we will soon publish video excerpts from "Oronoque" and parts of his stunning novel. From 1962 Aat made Amsterdam his home base.
