My Interests

A multitalented renaissance man in the tradition of Gordon Parks, filmmaker/novelist Jason Gilmore’s road to Hollywood was clear cut. A child prodigy who read and wrote at age 2, the Toledo, Ohio native wrote poetry, short stories and stage plays throughout junior high and high school. He decided he wanted to be a film director just before his senior year.
He studied film at the University of Pittsburgh and directed several student films and plays there, including his own one-act Playing Solitaire, for which he won an NAACP Award at the age of 17. After graduation, he relocated to Los Angeles with an armful of his own scripts. After several years of fruitless meetings with Hollywood producers, Jason used $7, 000 of his own money to write, direct and star in a 29-minute short film, How Shawn Parker Fell in Love, which premiered at the 2007 San Francisco Black Film Festival.
His screenplays have been recognized by the Sundance Screenwriters’ Lab and the Texas Film Institute. In addition, Jason has been a freelance journalist and has profiled Jimi Hendrix, Kanye West, Michael Jackson and countless others for a host of online and print magazines. He is a regular contributor to Intrepid Media and ThaHipHop.com.
Up next, he is rewriting his coming of age novel, Somewhere Between Here and There, and looking to write several new scripts. He has also been commissioned to write a TV pilot based loosely on his childhood for Storytime Entertainment.
