The Pearl and East of Eden by Steinbeck, Ernest Hemingway, anything by Carl Hiaasen, Empire Falls, The Shipping News, The Art of War by Sun-Tzu, Island of the Blue Dolphins, The Butter Battle War by Dr. Suess, John Irving (Son of the Circus, The World According to Garp, Cider House Rules), Get Shorty, Robots and Empire (Issac Asimov), Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, and Carlos Castaneda.

Heroes:

Anyone taking up the cause to serve and protect our country, all those who went into the World Trade Center when everyone else was coming out, Arland D. Williams Jr., Roger Olian, Kristen Cavin, Ronald Reagan and thousands of others I can't think of right now.
