Hutchinson Andrew Trio

Western Canada's Premier Accoustic Jazz Trio

About Me

The Hutchinson Andrew Trio is a unique voice on the Canadian Jazz Scene. Over the past 5 years this acoustic piano based trio has been bringing their own Western Canadian flair to the Canadian jazz landscape. They are honoured to be joined on their sophomore album ‘Music Box’ (Chronograph Records) by Canadian Jazz legend Ralph Bowen on Tenor saxophone. Music Box was released in January 2008. The album is already climbing the jazz charts across Canada.
On their own, the trio’s music can be categorized as contemporary acoustic jazz. They mix elements such as contemporary swing, latin, and acoustic groove to help form their own distinct sound. Kodi and Chris list artists such as Brad Mehldau, David Kikoski, Robert Glasper, and Kenny Werner as some of their influences.
Ralph Bowen has helped to bring a sophisticated sound for their second album. Known for his work with Horace Silver, Blue Note’s OTB, and 1994 Juno award winners ‘Free Trade’, Bowen brings a new dimension to the trio’s sound. Ralph appears on nearly half of the album. He adds a new layer to the group’s original compositions. His virtuosity and intensity have raised the bar from the trio’s first release, which was well received by both jazz fans and critics alike.
Released in January of 2005, their debut album Lost but not forgotten, reached CKUA radio’s top 10 for over a month and reached 3 on Calgary’s CJSW radio for over three months. In addition, CBC Radio put the album on their regular rotation as well as recording them live for air at the 2006 inaugural Canmore International Jazz Festival. The composition, 3 Corners of Emotion, was also featured in the Decidedly Jazz Danceworks production, Bulla!, which toured Canada over the summer of 2005. The album garnered a 2006 Western Canadian Music Award nomination in the Outstanding Jazz Recording category. More recently, the trio competed for the Galaxie Rising Star Award and GM Grand Prix Award on the mainstage at the 2007 Montreal International Jazz Festival.
The Hutchinson Andrew Trio has become a regular fixture on the Western Canadian jazz scene. They have performed to enthusiastic crowds at the events such as the Montreal, Medicine Hat, Calgary, Canmore and Yardbird Jazz Festivals, as well as headlining for the C-Jazz Festival. The trio plays regularly throughout the year with engagements at the Beat Niq Jazz and Social Club in Calgary, and the Four Rooms in Edmonton.
